30 carbine-Powder & bullet selection

Reloading M1 carbine. I am searching for a good powder to start with? Thinking about using a pistol bullet , (Hornady XTP 90 gr JHP 30 cal .309). Looking for all around purpose round ,plinking,target,short range defence? Will this work? What do you think? What do you use?

H110 was specifically developed for the 30 Carbine but most powders in that burn rate range will do just fine.

The bullet you are talking about is listed on the Hornady site with this information:

Heavier jacket stands up to the high pressures and velocities of the highest performance handgun cartridges.

So I'm guessing that bullet will work just fine in the 30 Carbine but the .308 86gr RN bullet they have is listed for use with the 30 Mauser so that might be better.

H110 or W296 (they are the same powder now) and 2400 are the classic .30 Carbine powders. AA#9 and AA-4100 should be just as good.

Herco works pretty well in a .30 Carbine revolver but I don't know if it'll cycle the action of a real carbine.

man151: H110 is my choice of powder for my M1 Carbine. I have never used the bullet you ask about so I can`t comment on them. I use 100 gr to 110 gr bullets both lead and jacketed, and I just got thru loading 250 round last night and had to stop because I ran out of powder. My Grand daughter helps me reload She is 5 yrs old and seem to really like it because she asked me all the time for us to go down stairs and make bullets. I shoot my M1 Carbine quite a bit and I have always liked them. From even back to my old Army days.

Stick with what the books tell you to use! And that's typically H110, Win296, or 2400 powders, which are all magnum powders, and 110gr. .308 FMJ bullets. You can also use lead RN bullets, soft-nosed jacketed bullets, and I just ordered some Barnes Triple Shock X 100gr. hollowpoints for home defense and deer hunting.

Powder: W296/ H110 or AA#9 are my go to powders. 4227, 2400, & Lil gun work and so do a couple of others.

Bullets. 90 Gr. XTP I never could get to reliably feed in my M1. If you wish to go the light weight route, use the Sierra 85 gr.RN. You will find published data for these from Hodgdon. You can get some pretty good velocity from these.

The 100 Gr. Plinkers (half jackets) from Speer and Hornady work well and so do The 110 gr. soft points from most major manufacturers.

If you want a real interesting self defense round, look at Speer's #1835 110 gr. hollow point. Load to the top (thin ring) cannelure for proper OAL. Their performance has never disappointed me.

I use Ramshot Enforcer almost exclusively in mine. But H-110 (W296) works well too.

I load my own cast bullets from a lee mold #90301, 100 grain flat base round nose in front of 12 1/2 grains of 4227 powder. Excellent accuracy, no leading, and a cheap load.

Like jcwit, I reload my own cast bullets for the .30 Carbine. I use 12.5gr of 2400 with them, and use 15.0gr of 4227 when I load 110gr jacketed bullets. Will not use W296/H110 powder due to it's inflexibility.

I dislike H110/W296...burns way too hot
For powder I use AA#9 and for bullets I use berrys or xtreme plated. Great price.
