Is there a powder and loading recommended for the military M1 Carbine to keep from damaging the firing mechanism/ gas block/piston/op rod like there is for the M1 Garand?
Thanks for any help.

No. I use W296 for carbine with jacketed bullets and Unique for a lead bullet load. See Lyman manual.

You can't hot rod 30 carbine. The gun was designed for one load. You can't raise pressures and not expect to hurt the gun. You can load softer and still be reliable.

I also use W296/H110 for 30 Carbine.

Some folks use other powders that are suitable for top loads in 357 Magnum and 44 Magnum such as 2400, IMR4227, H4227, or Lil Gun. Check your manuals.

GRIZZ22 has some good advice.

I use H110 for jacketed and gas checked lead. Lee makes a 120gr .309" mould that works great for me. That boolit, seated to the last driving band, in front of 12.5gr H110 is a fun little plinker!

I don't have any where near the experience others do, but I've been loading with 2400 or IMR4227 under the plated 110 gr RN. They've ran pretty well in both my Inland war baby and the Universal commercial.

I have some lead bullets I will try out in them to see how they like them.

I'll tell you, the carbines are a lot of fun and usually garner some attention at the range.

I've used H110 and IMR4227, both with FMJ and JSP. H110 is my favorite.

Lead can be risky with the gas system, and some guys do, with no ill affects....I'm not going to risk it.

I used IMR4227 and Winchester 630 when I loaded 30 Carbine. W630 is no longer made, so if I were to start again it would be with IMR4227.

WC 820 was specifically for the M1 Carbine. The jug I had is gone and it looks like the surplus is all gone as well. I switched to 2400 and it works fine. H110 and W296 should do just fine as well. This is for G. I. duplication with 110 FNJ or 110 RNSP bullets.

I never loaded lead bullets or reduced loads. Can't help with that.

Could this be because of varying bore diameters?
I'd suspect that it has more to do with the gas cylinder clearances than of the bores...which should be pretty much the same unless heavily worn or pitted. Depending on the age and mileage (and what kind of care it's had) with just a bit of sloppiness in the gas piston it might leak enough to not run well with reduced loads. I had an early Universal that ran great with factory ammo and full power reloads but never tried anything reduced...so everything is just speculation on my part.

That may be the case with some carbines but usually it's accuracy issue. I've seen guys shoot reduced jacketed loads that work well try lead bullets with the same charge. Pretty decent accuracy with jacketed turned into patterns with lead.

W296/H110 is my go to powder for .30 Carbine. I started at 14.0 gr but could not get reliable operation until right near 15.0 gr. So I just use 15.0 gr and have zero issues. My understanding from some old articles is that the military load was 15.0 gr W296. I imagine as cfullgraf mentioned, that any magnum pistol powder will work, such as AA9, IMR4227, 2400, VV110.
