Actually one of the reasons that Indiana is one of the most pro-gun states is that they don't have any really large cities (Indianapolis is on the large side of medium-sized) that really overbalance the basic rural nature of the state.

Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin would be a lot more pro-gun if they didn't have those festering boils called Detroit, Chicago and Milwaukee.

Umm, Indy manages to have the "feel" of a medium sized city but in actuality it is either the 9th or 12th largest in the nation. Somewhere around 2 million(1.8, 1.9?). The sucker is big, regardless of how it presents itself.

You know you're doing alright as a state when you walk into work (IT job in a large Indianapolis office building) and the security guard on duty tells you that he, "hopes you have a gun on you because we don't have any spares." (true story, happened yesterday):D

So, yeah. We're gun friendly even here in Liberalapolis.

And for no reason at all.......

One thing to remember here is that near the top although it does say "permit to carry a gun in public" most of the lengthy article seems to suggest that a permit is needed to own a handgun which is not the case. The number of permits does not equal the number of handguns legally owned, if you only intend to use it on your property then no permit is necessary. As long as you meet the age and background check requirements you can have as many as you like.

Is it just me, or does anyone else living here in Indiana sense a "BOHICA" episode in the works for us?

Personally, I've been sort of expecting the "Star" to make a serious strafing run on us eventually ever since Gannett (the 'News McNuggets' folks) bought out the Pulliam family a few years ago.

The whole tone and content of the paper has changed fairly radically. Where the Op/Ed page used to present a selection of syndicated columns that was balanced to present both sides current issues, we now get virtually the same bicoastal Media Establishment drivel from the same bunch of "progressive" armchair pundits every damn day.

On occasion we'll see something from George Will or Wiiliam Safire. Usually when they've got something to say that's liable to reflect negatively on the current Administration in some fashion. All of the 'lesser' conservative bylines have completely disappeared.

Local, regional, and national news items have changed too, both in what is chosen for publication and how those incidents are predigested by the 'reporters' and editors to impart the desired connotational spin on things. Lots of nifty little pie charts, graphs, and carefully edited statistical tables. Carefully chosen to support "correct' dogma, of course.

We haven't seen the last cup of chowder from this particular oyster yet, gang. All hands prepare to bend over.

I live in Indianapolis, I was born and raised here. I spent twelve years of my life in California as a broker. I thank God everday that I returned to my roots.
Indiana is not perfect but generally people are friendly and care for their neighbor. People watch out for each other and their kids. Indy is very much a family town. Most hoosiers grew up shooting grandpa's old shotgun or .22 rifle. Guns are not a big deal here. However ,you are out of luck come hunting season if you have a high powered rifle. The state is mostly flat and hunting is limited to shotguns, bow or black powder. Many a hoosier treks to Michigan or Canada for big game.
A CCW in Indiana is one of the perks of living here. Most here are responsible gun owners.
I would say most in Indiana are moderate to conservative no matter what party they are. We tend to vote more like independents, we vote for the guy not necessarily the party. Those who are not seem to be from out of state and don't get the hoosier "ethic". I hope we keep our identity, it has served us well.

The state is mostly flat and hunting is limited to shotguns, bow or black powder.

But they allow hunting with a bolt action "Handgun" or Encore in something like a .308 that will shoot over to the next county. Yet you cannot hunt with something like a 44 mag lever action - never understood this reasoning? The laws are outdated and/or those who write the laws have little knowledge of firearms.

I live in one of the smaller towns here in IN. Moving up here from Jacksonville NC was quite a change. Did not feel people were out to screw me over all the time like in NC. While living here I left items like a camera and a cd player in the gym before. Amazingly these items were turned into the front desk. Back in NC more than likely I never would have seen these items ever again. Met many people here in IN over the years that went way out of thier way to help me out when I needed it. The work ethic mind set is far different as well.

The gun laws are far more friendly than in NC as well. I recieived a permit here after only being here for a few months. In NC I had to buy purchase permits every time I wanted a handgun - a real hassle.

LOL, yes Yoda...the lever action in .44 mag has always baffled me too with regards to Indiana hunting laws yet they will allow a .308 pistol. Indiana is a gun friendly state as far as possession.
It is hard to explain to someone the "hoosier ethic" unless someone has experienced it. I did not know how much I missed it...living in California for some years.

The following is information I got from the Census Bureau and Texas DPS websites...

Est. Texas population 18 years or older (2003): 22,118,509
Carry permits (approx.): 204,509
Permits per every 1,000 adults: 12.98

Which puts Texas somewhere between 15th and 20th place. It's really hard to know exactly, since the per capita figure approximates the U.S. national average.

Yoda, wierd hunting regulations here? Oh, yeah, the stories I could tell you!:what: :D

Yoda and Rex, FYI for your hankerin' (a little Southern lingo for y'all) for centerfire raffle, check into getting a "predation permit" with DNR. Good places to check for predation are: orchard owners, large soybean operations and Christmas tree growers.

You'll soon see the inherent superiority of the 6.5 x 55 Swede. Oops! Wrong thread!:uhoh:
