I'm nearing the end of my 300 AAC AR15 build. I need a barrel, BCG, and forend/rail. Of those parts, only the barrel has not yet been selected.

As much as I would love a SBR, it's not an option where I live. So, I'll be using a 16" barrel on this build. So, I guess I'm looking for options and recommendations from you folks. I'm only famailiar with a few barrels out there and I'm really not sure which ones to stay away from. I'll be shooting light (110gr) and heavy (220gr) through it. Some suppressed and some unsuppressed. I'm unsure of optimal twist and gas length.

For a budget, I'd like to keep it at $250 or less. I could stretch it to $300 if it's worth it though.

I found a Seekins barrel that looks decent. It's melonite over stainless, which I'm unfamiliar with and I have no idea who is makes their barrels. I've also seen Core15, AR Stoner, CMMG, and Wilson, but again, I don't know much about them. And the Noveske's and AAC's seem to run above my budget.

Brownells is allowing back orders on the 16in Daniel Defense barrels. $279 with a 1-8 twist. Gas length isn't listed but I'd guess it's a midlength. The 1-8 twist should be fine to stabilize the 200-220 grain bullets you'll want to run suppressed.

I'm thinking along the same lines but I want an SBR so lets expand the question to what would be preferred for a pistol or SBR build with some suppressor usage.

I've an 11.5" 7.62x39 AR SBR that is great when the mags work (very picky about bullet shape) and a joy to shoot suppressed (but the 7.62x39 has a loud supersonic crack), but I figure shorter would be better for the 220 subsonics in .300 Blk.

What say ye?

http://sotaarms.com/component/jshopping/product/view/13/113?Itemid=0 cheapest barrel I can find.

http://sotaarms.com/component/jshopping/product/view/13/17?Itemid=0 more $$, but stainless.

I don't see dsarms selling just barrels anymore. :(

http://www.midwayusa.com/find?users...&newcategorydimensionid=17117&searchscope=all midway has a variety of brands with reviews for you. I've kind of been eyeballing their arstoner branded lightweight stainless 16" barrel.

But I would like to hear opinions as well. especially in terms of gas systems. what length is most desirable, are barrels typically over or under gassed, does one need an adjustable gas block? Is making your own adjustable block hard? etc.

hey, that's what I want to build! just use a slightly longer float tube and a different optic and an m4 stock.

The Seekins barrel is looking better and better. It's only $230 and ready to ship. And from what I'm reading, 1 in 7 twist should be perfect for the bullets that I intend to load.

I own a complete upper from AAC. The twist they used on the 16" barrel of mine is 1:8. According to AAC, 1:8 is the optimal twist for folks wanting to fire both supersonic and sub-sonic ammo. Most 300 BLK barrels I have seen have been 1:7 twists, though.

I have a 16" barrel with a carbine length gas tube. It works well with both super- and sub-sonic ammo, though initially it had cycling issues with Remington 220gr subs.

I joined a 300BLK forum this morning and did some reading on barrel twist. I found a few mentions that many manufacturers are switching from 1 in 8 to 1 in 7 as of late. It seems that some of the really heavy bullets (245gr) can tumble from a 1 in 8.

Honestly, I think either one would be fine for my uses.

AAC switched to 1/7 too after it was released.

Just a correction, 300BLK barrels only cycle ammo reliably in carbine or pistol length gas. It was not developed to run in Midlength gas system at all, so Brownells probably has a Carbine gas length.

For an SBR, a 9" or 10.5" should work well.

I have a 5.56 Noveske upper and I would buy another if I were doing a 300 build. Excellent quality.

AR Stoner here - 16" lightweight SS 5R, carbine gas. I only shoot supersonic, but it has been 100% reliable and 1 MOA or under with 125 gr. loads.
