ok guys so i'm debating whether or not to build or just buy a complete upper. I already have a bushmaster xm15e2s and could use the lower and bolt carrier group for this. I plan on loading my own ammo and this will primarily be used for white tails. don't ask why, i just like this platform.

what i'm looking for is a 16" barrel (prefer in m4 profile) with carbine gas port. I want a low profile gas block and a free float quad rail that will cover the gas block. I've been looking at different brands and configurations but seems rather pricy when assembled. This will be my first attempt at building one.

I've been considering buying the barrel first. (link below) it's a CMMG barrel and fits everything I want but not chrome lined. I don't think it's going to be shot much either. What do you guys think of this barrel? suggestions welcomed.

the core15's upper is exactly how I want it except with a 3 prong flash hider.

Well, it's pretty easy, so don't sweat that part. I converted a .223 upper, but eventually changed the float tube and upper as well. Just a simple Hogue FF tube. Fast and light.

Just pick out your parts and go for it.

if i buy the cmmg barrel, i might want to keep it all cmmg... like with this...

next would be a rail... I was considering daniel defense but the price... I came down to midwest industries.. any suggestions for a good quality free float quad rail?

Are you going to suppress it? If not don't bother with a 300bo, you can use the.money for something designed to be supersonic from the beginning.

maybe one day suppressed but not anytime soon. I was really thinking about upgrading to a 6.8 spc or 6.5 grendel upper but with the 300 bo, only the barrel is different. I have plenty of 556 brass which i would use to make the rounds. it just makes more sense to go with the 300 bo that other calibers. most i'll shoot is 100-150 yards and the 300 bo will be plenty for deer at that range.

i just like the ar platform because it's semi auto, reliable and accurate. if i was shooting them 300 yard + then i would definitely get a bolt gun.

I've been impressed with everything CMMG has made but I went with the Med. contour SS AR Stoner 1:8 twist 5R rifling and the smooth/knurled YHM forearm. I don't know that you will save anything building it yourself but it's quite a learning experience and groups very well. Looking forward to getting a young grandson into hunting deer with it next season but may have to christen it myself first.
Enjoy the build!

some of the prices they want for the complete upper is up there. I thought i'd save a little by buying only what i need and use what i already have like the lower and bolt/bolt carrier.

300

All the info I have read has pushed for a dedicated new bcg so that's the way I went but I'd be interested to know which way you go and how it works for you.

Get ready to reload for it too, its the only way you'll feed it without going broke and paying for over-priced ammo right now. I have two blackouts, great caliber/cartridge, but if you dont reload, its not for you...

All the talk about it being useless unless it's suppressed is kind of ridiculous. Sure there's better choices out there but you can use the same bolt as .223 and cut down .223 brass which a lot of people already have a pile of...and then use bullets that can be found anywhere. You also don't need to change your magazines either.

It also fits the niche where if you want to hunt with an AR but you don't want to use .223 for deer, you can convert to .300 blackout as easy as it gets. Ballistically it's pretty similar to a 30-30. I can understand the desire for an AR platform rifle that has lots of hunting bullet choices and cheap plentiful brass. If you don't reload....another choice might be better...but if you reload it sounds great to me.

I recently built a .300 Blackout upper for a relative, using a YHM fluted, chrome-lined barrel. It's a tackdriver and certainly not overly expensive. Has a quirky thread pattern, but an inexpensive adapter is available, should you decide to suppress later. I have absolutely no use for a quad-rail handguard, but do like the plain YHM tube somebody else mentioned. I do use the YHM indexing nut, which has to be bought separately.

midway is having their sale: $45 Off $300! Might have to buy this sooner than I had wanted. I wonder if the coupon could be used more than once because I have other things to get like dies and mags...

kinda suck cause then you would have to pay shipping again for a new order...
