This seems to be the result of my "investigation".
My understanding is that if you want to jump in power from these 2 calibers, prices will go up very significantly....I did check the most popular brands (Ruger, Remington, Weatherby, Savage, Marlin, CZ, etc...).
If you want a 375 H&H or a similar boomer and up, is going to cost you at least a grand (MSRP).

If you "settle" for a 300 Wby or a 338 Win Mag, you can have one as little as $400 (for example the excellent Weatherby Vanguard).

Did I miss some other choices (I'm talking about new guns) or this is pretty much confirmed??

I handled a CZ Safari Magnum in 416 Rigby at Cabelas in Kansas City.

Less than 800 bucks out the door.

Ammunition for the 416 is a different story. I think the last time I saw any for sale a box of 20 was something like $125.

Read your post a little closer.

If you go by MSRP on websites, you will grossly overpay for everything.

MSRP on my Ruger M77VT is almost $900 bucks.
I think I paid $550 for mine.

You are right, however I did not know that the MSRP and the actual price could vary that much for specialized rifles...congratulation on your purchase!!!

For example, the $399 Weatherby Vanguard is basically almost impossible to buy for less....I think you can go as little as $369 at Wal Mart, if you can find one.

Around here (Western WA) shop prices above MSRP, on average, are not unusual...actually very common!!!

You still have the screaming deals here and there on popular models and calibers....but not in that power class.

Not sure if you want brute power or long range ballistics but for about $800 you can get a Ruger No.1 in .458 Lott. It's a good deal if you want a real cannon.

saturno, rifles like this are, IMHO, kind of like -40 degree sleeping bags: expensive and specialized, and not everyone does the kinds of things where they are useful.

Are you going to Africa?

No, just for collection purpose and occasional very long range shooting (which the vast majority African cartridges are not suited to, I know)
I just do not have in my collection a big bore powerful rifle, presently I stop at 30-06 class.
And I do not want to spend a fortune, so looking for a happy compromise.

You might compare the .340 Weatherby magnum to the two calibers you mentioned.

Fairly impressive energy, the recoil isn't too terribly bad.

There are dozens, perhaps hundreds of rifles that fit your question. I have over half a dozen in my safe.

If you really do own rifles and shoot, perhaps you might take a little time and visit a gun shop. Amazing what you could learn.

I do...and I never see any rifle in big powerful calibers (over 338 Win Mag) under $800-1000 aroudn here (Western WA)

Like someone else already mentioned, Ruger No. 1 in .458 lott, .416, .375, and I think they also chamber it in 450/400nitro express or something like that.

Remington also has the 798 in .375H& H and .458WM for under $900, but they have a less than stellar repuation for accuracy and build quality from what I've read.

I believe T/C also have barrels up to .416 as well that are reasonably priced.

I imagine the CZ already discussed is the economical way to go. Watch out for ammo prices. However, if you're very lucky, maybe you will find another .416 Model 700 KS for $400 new in the store like I did...
