I know the 300 Wby shoot flatter but the 338 carries more "punch", because of heavier and larger bullets, at shorter distances.

However, if I want to use the rifle for extreme long range target shooting (600-1000 yards or beyond that) there are practical situations a 300 Wby can handle that a 338 Win Mag can't??

I'll try to explain better.

What I mean is that because of its more curved trajectory (very similar to the average 30-06), I have to compensate more with the 338 to reach the same distances compared to a 300 Wby.
There are some extreme ranges, still within the realm of real actual practical target shooting, where no amount of compensation will keep a 338 in the air where the 300 is still shootable??? What about sensitivity to crosswind between the two??

Thanks!!

While they are flatter they are inferior rounds for shooting at the ranges you mention. 600-1000yds you want a 308 or 300wm, if just shooting paper maybe 260rem or one of the 6.5s. The larger calibers you mention are flater but you can easly find very nice accurate rifles with HEAVY BULL barrells like a Rem 700, Savage 10/110, Howa 1500 Varminter, etc. When are setting up 1000yd its better to have a accurate rifle/cartage that you have you have to make a lot of moa adjustments do, then a less accurate rifle that shoots flatter.
