A buddy can get a NICE ADL in 300 Weatherby, but I was wondering if it can be re-barreled to something cheaper to shoot like 300 win mag or 30-06 or .308. Would you have to swap out the bolt too?

the wby, uses a standard .532 magnum rim diameter on a full length H&H action. Any standard magnum with that size rim diameter will work. If you want to go to a standard 06 size case, then you will need to get a new bolt. If you buddy reloads, he could swap to the 308 norma magnum, and get near .300wm performance with less powder. Another good option in the magnum arena would be the 7mm remington, its usually quite a bit cheaper then 300wm (atleast here it is).

It would be way cheaper to just buy an ADL in the caliber you want in the first place.

Where's the fun in that.:)

RC Model makes a very good point. You're going to spend at least a couple hundred plus the cost of the barrel. If you're already spending $250+ on the smithing, might as well get a high quality barrel, so there's another $450. If I was in that deep, I would want to get the action trued ($50+) and get it bedded ($100) and I wouldn't feel right spending that kind of $$$ on factory tuperware, so add a new stock for another $300 to $500.

Keep the barrel and spend the money on reloading tools and supplies. You'll come out ahead and pick up a new hobby to boot.

Right, the 300 can be downloaded to 30-06 velocities. It costs almost the same to reload 300 mags as 308. Bullets and primers are the same price. Brass is a little more expensive, but you already have than. A pound of powder won't go quite as far. You'll need to spend a couple hundred or so setting up, but once you get a press, scales and the other stuff you are set up. If you decide to load other rounds once you get the basic stuff another set of dies will cost less than a box of premium ammo.

You can actually reload the .300WbyMag for less than what it costs to load similar loads in a .308 or .30/06.

Widners, PatsReloading, and GI-brass sell pull down mil-surp powders from .50bmg ammo.

I've got a .300RemUltMag that I load with either PrviPartisan or Remington Cor-lokt bullets from before the big price increases of several years ago. I bought 500 180gr Corlokts for ~40.00.

I can load my big .300 for less than the cost of my .30/30 or .30/06 as I bought powder for $50 for 16lbs (WC-860 from Wideners). Heck I even bought a .257WbyMag because it wouldn't sell because of the cost of ammo.
I'm getting 3,300fps from a 180gr bullet from the .300RUM with 107.0gr of WC-860 (used H870 data as starting point), and 3,550 from .257wby with 80.0gr of WC-860 under a 100gr PtSpt (Hornady blems from MidwayUSA for $8.00/100).

I've got less than $500 in both my .257wbyMag and .300RemUltMag.
I'd definitely get the .300wby and enjoy it. But, You'll definitely need to reload for it to get best benifit from it.

You can also load with Acc.Arms #5744 and get .308wcf performance from the big Weatherby.
