Isn't that distance farther out than you'd ever shoot in the field?
Absolutely, no one should hunt with anything at anywhere near the transonic region. That distance is pretty much only for target. Although what was originally said is that they have the same effective range, that "The .300 Win mag isn't going to get you something the 30-06 can't...even range" and that simply is not true because it has the same power as a .30-06 at greater range, thereby allowing it to safely take larger game at equal distance or the same game at greater distance (much like Mike said). But in terms of hunting you are correct in that the transonic region makes no difference (with respect to these particular cartridges).
 
If a guy needed a Corvette, he'd need a 300 winmag.

If he needed to write about it in a shooting mag, or learned what he knows about hunting from a shooting mag, he'd go for the 300 winmag.

Many of us never did get the memo, however, and missed the kool-aid stand.

I'm sure the 300 winmag is a fine cartridge. But then, so is the 375 H&H.
