Deer ain't hard to kill. IMO a 243 kills them just as dead as anything bigger. Even a 22 centerfire will kill deer, but you have to make better choices as to the bullet, shot placement and the range you shoot.

Sometimes a deer, or any big game animal just doesn't want to die regardless of what you hit them with. They are dead, but sometimes it takes a little time for them to lie down. I had a grizzled old buck that I put a 165 gr bullet fired from a 30-06 that took out both lungs and left a 2" exit hole. He still managed to run over 100 yards. I've had them fall in their tracks from a 223. Just because one runs a long way doesn't mean you need a bigger gun or better bullet. Sometimes it just happens.

One reason I’m leaning towards the 300wsm is it’s lighter and easier to carry

As long as I shot it equally well that would seal the deal for me. The 270 will have less recoil from equal weight rifles and is more than adequate. Which means most people will probably shoot it more accurately.

I like the 300 WSM cartridge. With the best loads it comes within 50 fps of 300 WM, which no game animal will ever notice. But since it uses a LOT less powder than 300 WM, you get recoil that exactly splits the difference between 300 WM and 30-06.

I like my Remington 700 SPS in 270WSM for its lightweight and short action. It is a couple pounds under my .270WIN Remington Classic including the scopes and much lighter than my Ruger 77 in .243 (heavy barrel). I use a Ruger 77MKII in 300WM for my elk rifle. Since acquiring the .270WSM the Remington BDL in25-06 I have had for 50 years and my Ruger 77MKII "Sporter" in 30-06 are languishing in my safe. They sometimes go along as spares but rarely get shot.

basically with today's technologies, the average deer dies if you point a high speed .22 or bigger center-fire at them and pull the trigger at reasonable distances.

I was thinking about my post and the “insignificant” difference between them and thought about actually picking one or the other. First question that popped up was “what bullet”.

There are a number of them that are great-good choices and some that are poor or bad ones.
