Hey ya'll, I have been thinking of getting a semi auto .308 rifle. I don't really want an AR10. I have been looking at the Fal, cetme, and ptr 91.

I need some first hand reviews. I'm not looking for a precision rifle. I'm just looking for steel plate accuracy.
The adjustable gas setting on the Fal sounds interesting.

Decent accuracy can be had with any of those 3.
If I had to pick just one, I think I'd go with an FAL. Ive heard that the ones built by Century can be problematic...but I have an L1A1, and with the proper mags, it'll run all day without a hiccup. They have a very good balance to them, and are natural pointers. The adjustability of the gas system is neat. Metric versions are much easier to find magazines for.
I would avoid Cetme entirely. Im sure they are out there, but I have yet to see one that didnt have issues. I have one, i like it, its fun, and its a pain in the posterior.
I do not have a PTR per se, but I am a fan of the HK91/G3 chassis, too.
I love the way they operate, but they are a bit heavier, and "clunky" compared to the FAL.
The iron sights are great, mags are cheap, available, and reliable.

Personal preference of course.
If you can arrange to shoot them both, that would be ideal.

I like the fal, mine chews "dents " brass though. Reloading the brass will be a problem. I also like the new FN auto also, forgot the name of it.

I can, while kneeling, put a .308 round on torso sized steel plate at will out to 400M using my PTR-91SC. Dropping to Prone will get me to 600.

I've honestly never shot it for groups, but it is "Steel Plate" accurate. My CETME is a little harder, as it's not scoped.

The FAL's I've shot have been very similar in accuracy. i.e. torso targets out to 600M or so pretty easily.

Not to make things more confusing, but FAL and PTR91 prices are right there with M1a standard prices. I've owned a DSA STG58a FAL that was great, but I would consider the M1A a better rifle.

The M1A is capable of better accuracy but that is it. The FAL is easier to scope, with the DSA mount, and has better ergonomics. Though the M1A is not absurdly difficult the DSA mount is rock solid and very fast to use. The charging handle on the FAL is also in to correct location.

Having shot both back to back I much prefer to FAL, but the M1A is not bad either.

The PTR will be a fair bit cheaper if you get the base model, and while I like them most folks dislike the sights and ergonomics.

PTR's are rough on brass, and quite often you can't reload the empties if thats a concern.

The PTR is also probably the easiest to scope, and has a lot of different furniture options.

I shoot mine in the local 200 yd high power competitions and on a good day I'm middle of the pack on scoring, its no match grade AR for sure.

just curious as to why not an AR-10 with the right setup? I was fortunate enough to be able to shoot a custom AR-10 with a 24" barrel and a 12x fixed scope that allowed me to hit steel plates at 500m, 800m and 1100 meters consistently.

I was quite impressed... and had a lot of fun!

Ar-10 types are easiest to scope and most accurate, as far as what is inherent to the platform. For years though, I had no love for the AR platform. Built myself an AR-15 a couple years ago and have been warming to them.

My .308 is a PTR-91F. Rather highly modded, but the barrel, receiver, and reciprocating parts are original. Have a handload now that shoots between 1-1.5MOA off a bipod. Punching paper with it yields groups that wont impress internet mavens, but I can hit what I shoot at. All day long. Popping milk jugs at 450yd is challenging and entertaining...
