Im looking to purchase a .308 AR as a SHTF weapon, General fun gun, and for hunting deer and elk.

Right now im stuck between the Armalite AR-10 A4 vs. the Rock River Arms LAR-8 mid length A4.

Which gun would you prefer? Weight is a huge consideration, as i plan on keeping the total package under 9 pounds with a light scope.

Johnny: I just got an early Xmas gift in the form of a RRA LAR-8 (Mid-length) flattop with the 6 posn stock. My main purpose was deer hunting as I find the AR style just fits me perfectly. I plan to put a Leupold 2-7x33 VX-1 on it. I think I'll be in under the 9 pounds. It is a tad heavier than I thought it'd be, but I still find it a satisfactory weight. For me it came down to the DPMS LR-308T, and the RRA LAR-8. The difference for me was the Hogue pistol grip and 2-stage trigger on the LAR-8. Word to the wise: Careful with the SHTF talk on the forum. The mods get touchy about it, for good reason.

I went Armalite. It shoots great with no problems. Armalite comes with a two stage trigger as well. RRA may be a tad cheaper. I didn't like the look of the DPMS. I put a troy rail on mine and it is not light! I may upgrade to a Carbon fiber tube in the future to lighten it up.

I have put a Nikon 3x9x40 scope on it since. I would go Armalite!
