Need help deciding on what I want next. Want a very acurate paper and possible local competion rifle. Will shoot 100-300 yards. I have a .223 picked out if I go that route. I was thinking the Icon route because of cost. I like CZs. I have one of those alreadt in .22. Any help would be great.

1) CZ 550 Varminter Kevelar ($810) or Walnut ($699)
2) Thompson Center Icon ($595)
3) Winchester Model 70 Featherweight (695)
4) Savage Model 12 Varminter (695)

CZ, Icon, Savage, Winchester in that order for me. I like being a tad different, so I love the CZs. It doesn't hurt that all of my CZs (4 of them) have been awesome and have given me no trouble. Fit and finish is above average. I would believe that the featherweight would be a bit nasty on the shoulder after several rounds downrange. The 12V would be a great choice as well due to the rep of Savage, the trigger, stock, accuracy, and aftermarket. I prefer wood stocks though. Just my opinion. I'd rather have a wooden stocked rifle that would beat the pants off of an all black and synthetic rifle any day of the week. Once again, that's just my opinion. It seems like you have done some homework. If They were all equal contenders in my eye, I would go and put hands on each and every one of them. You may find that one fits you better or is more comfortable. Only you will know which trigger you like the best, or which stock just doesn't feel right. All are great choices and it is more likely that you will make a bigger difference in groups than the rifles will.

I have A Savage 10 FP It shoots very well and I like it. If I were to buy another I would look for something A little better finished with A sliker bolt And better stock.

Can't complain about my Savage 10FP, a tad over 1/2" groups at 100yrds is the norm.:)

+1 for the Savage-
You can't go wrong with the Savage 12, super accurate... comparably...
There is many model to choose from, check out the Savage site.
Remington has the VSF, XCR Tactical, 40X-

If your going to use it for compitition, the Savage 12 Benchrest, Palma,
F Class, BVSS, F/TR, LRPV depending on your cliber of choice.

no question. i would take the icon. intergal picatinny mounts, 3 lug bolt, user adjustable trigger. what's not to like? if only they would make an icon for us lefties. add a manners stock of your choice and let the good times roll.

Since I've got a CZ750, I'd vote for a CZ.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention Rem. 700 series. They are good for the price with a lot of aftermarket products available.

heres a great choice
Yep, those Savages are pretty nice, as are the old Win model 70s with claw extractor (the one PRE 64 eludes to). How bout the new Mod. 70s with the claw/controlled round feed? Are they as good as the old ones?

I'm not...never liked them, or much else made by Remington, but I will say they are pretty accurate for the money.

If you go to Savage's web site, the Model 12FV is no longer chambered in .308 Winchester. The Model 12 Low Profile is chambered in .308 Winchester however.

I like blued steel over stainless steel, so I'm pretty disappointed that Savage chose to discontinue the Model 12FV.

I would have to go with my Spanish FR-8. It is carbine length and chambered in my favorite round IN THE WORLD!:D This would be my choice, hands down. Accurate, perfect length, and just all around kick ass looks.

Well if you are truly serious about what you want the 1st thing I would do is eliminate rifles with sporter contour barrels. Think.... Heavy barrels.

Benchrest and competition shooters don't use soda straw barrels for a reason. Not saying you can't get some good groups out of a hunting rifle once in a while. But day after day a good heavy barrel rifle will strut its stuff compared to a lighter weight barrel setup.

When hunting in the western states (and Provinces) a firearm is carried more than actual shooting. A .308 carbine is perfectly matched for big game hunting, whether the quarry is deer or animals much larger such as elk or moose.

These photos show my older Remington model 660 carbine in .308 which went out of production in 1971. But many modern bolt action carbines are built by such companies such as Browning, Remington, Savage, TIKKA, and others. A barrel longer than 20 inches is of no value to me and just gets in the way during my hunts in the foothills, forests, and badlands.

Good hunting to you.

Of those, the Winchester Featherweight would be my first choice as a hunting rifle. It carries and handles like almost nothing else, and it has the features I'd want (3-position safety, CRF).

However, for paper-punching competition, none of this stuff matters. So, one of the Varminters would be my choice. The Kevlar probably makes the most sense as a really accurate 300 yard rifle.

Mine is a Savage model 12bvss this rifle is beyond sweet. Shoots average of 1/2 groups at 100 yards.

Looks Like I am going with the Savage

Thanks for everyones help. I will pull the trigger on Thursday.

I'm going to vote for the CZ550, with Walnut stock. I just bought one late last month, and fitted it out to my liking. The fit and finish of the metal parts on the rifle is first class. It is not cobbed together and made of MIM parts, etc.

I've shot the Savage, and owned Remington 700s. These can all be quite accurate rifles, and Savage accuracy is quite astounding, IME.

The detachable box magazine on the CZ is at first not really all that great in concept: only holds 4 rounds. BUT when you learn that the CZ550 and CZ750 share the same action and barrel, and that the 10 round CZ750 mags will fit the 550 action just fine, the world changes complexion.

Here is a thread on our sister forum I wrote up for the CZ. Perhaps it will help. A couple of plusses for this rifle that all the others in your lineup lack are the set trigger (moderate plus) and the controlled round feed (huge plus).

I did not like the Kevlar stock. The palm swells were just too large for my tastes, and it is made by HS Precision, friend of murderer Lon Horiuchi. The walnut stocks made by CZ are, IME, without a doubt, the best wood stocks in the industry. The details are stunning, the fit second to none, and the ergonomics perfect for my build/physique.

Assuming they all shoot similarly, I would opt for the CZ. However, I'm pretty sure the Savage Model 12 will outshine the rest of the field, accuracy wise. Too bad they are just so homely and made of MIM parts etc.
