Savage model 11 or 10 or Stevens 200 and with good optics, will easily shoot 1Moa provided you do your part. There are others but IMO these rifles shoot the best out of the box and you can get after market parts like triggers, stocks and barrels to make it to your own liking. The other inexpensive brands don't have the aftermarket parts availible like the Savage does Next would be the Rem model 700 ADL, but the cost would be higher for the Remmy

I gotta second the Savage. We have a savage in .270, and it shoots beautifully.

I have to give a plug for the Stevens 200. All it does is what it's supposed to do...shoot straight. Not particularly pretty or classy, but definitely on the upper range of serviceable.

Howa.308 HB most with houge overmold stock. weatherby vanguard both made by the same japan mfg. And mine started just as basic as it gets but since then they have gone into another realm and they have transitioned into something to look at and to shoot high quailty and upgraded as many item are offered for them that I was seeking..

Good values in order YMMV:

Howa - CDNN has them for $349 for standard barrel to $399 for bull barrel

XS7 - Great little shooter and stainless is an option

Axis - Just feels a bit cheaper than the XS7, olus the XS7 was a bit more accurate for me.

I have a marlin XS-7, the 308 and I think it is a great rifle. I would highly recommend this rifle to any one who needs to get a good rifle on a budget. I picked up my rifle and a new Vortex scope for about 510.00 and am very happy with both.

It shoots great, I am still fairly new to rifle and have never had any guidance in shooting and it is amazing how well this thing groups. I put a few boxes of Winchester rounds through it and that is it. I have however put a few hundred hand loads though it. It really seems to like a 165 grain BTSP from Speer with some IMR 4064.

Good luck on your search.

I recently bought a Weatherby Vanguard Carbine .308 (built by Howa, Japan) from Budsgunshop.com for $406, and threw on a Weaver K-4 4x38mm scope.

A friend of mine has the Marlin XS7 in .243 and it's a sweet shooting gun. The Marlin is probably the better value if you don't mind the blind magazine.

anyone have experience with a marlin xs7?
I bought one last year for hunting and mounted a Redfield scope on it. I was able to shoot a 1" group at 100 yards with it with 150 gr Barnes VOR-TX ammo, so I'm pretty happy. Two shots, two deer.

I used the VOR-TX because I wanted to see if it shot better with 150 gr or 165 gr ammo. The only ammo that I could find locally in both weights from the same manufacturer was the VOR-TX. A 1" group from the 150s and a 3" group from the 165s told me all I needed to know. Sure, the ammo wasn't cheap, but I can put that bullet exactly where I want it.

Well I think you will be quite happy with your new rifle. I know I like mine a lot and those I know who have bought them have really like liked them.

Ill second the Savage line, I have a few in different calibers, and they are all accurate rifles. Not the prettiest to look at the more basic ones, but the Mod 12bvss I own is a really sharp looking rifle.

I have several Remmy 700's in .308 too, they are also good rifles. I have a tac in .308 and the varminter in .308.

The tupperware stocked savages are around your price point as well as the sps line from Remmy 700's. I think that if you went to the toy store, and handled both and picked the one which has the best feel to YOU, and you will be fine.
