I have a Savage Model 10 20" heavy barrel .308 rifle. I have been using Sierra 168 grain HPBTM bullets with 41 grains of IMR 4064 powder. It shoots pretty well with this, but after reading an article on 20" barrels I am wondering if I should go to a faster powder. The 4064 load shoots real well. So, should I stick with that or try a different powder? I will be shooting 200 yards maximum in a Varmint Class match this week-end. Does anyone have any pet loads for .308 using 168 grain bullets shot through a 20" barrel bolt rifle? Thanks

You can always use 4895; usually about .5 gr less than 4064 (IIRC). I use both in my REM LTR with a short bbl.

4895 is still available in surplus, just buy a couple of kegs at time.

Another vote for 4895

A friend gave me his pet load for 165 to 168 gr. bullets in .308 Win:
42 gr. of IMR 4895 in federal cases with Rem 9-1/2 primers.

I tried it in my Savage Scout with both the Sierra 168 MatchKing and the 165 GameKing and the results were pretty impressive. Point of Impact was about the same as the Remington 165 factory load, but groups were tighter. I have a couple of groups from 200 yds that surprised me, given the short, light rifle and a 2.5 x scope.

I got sidetracked before wringing out the possibilities. Hey, given the type rifle and its assigned niche, this is plenty good enough for me! :D

Best of luck - -
Johnny

Late note - - Just experienced yet another example of why you shoud ALWAYS second source ANY load data. In proof reading this post just before clicking "Send Reply," I caught a typo in number of grains above. Fixed now, but glitches occur, y'know?
