I have the chance to buy another rifle soon (TAX RETURN!!!). Here is what I am looking at...
.270
Weatherby Vanguard-new-synthetic-$400
Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow, synthetic- used- $385
Savage 110- new-synthetic-accutrigger-$400
Marlin XL7- new- synthetic- $300
Remington 700-new- synthetic- $400
Remington 700- new- Camo- $475

----OR------

.308
Marlin XL7-new- synthetic- $300
Weatherby Vanguard- new - synthetic- $400

I have a Nikon 3-9x40 or a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 to top these off.
I live in Idaho and hunt often in Idaho and Nevada. I will use this gun for the range, deer, and possibly elk. I want an accurate gun.

I am not new to rifles and I currently own the Savage in .223 and the Marlin in .25-06. I have owned in the past the Winchester Model 70 (.308), and the Remington 700 (.223) and I loved both of these, but back then I was not concerned with adjustable triggers, etc.

BOTTOM LINE
I have read that the Weatherby and Remington triggers are adjustable... please inform me about the triggers.... What about the Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow's trigger?

I understand the differences between the two calibers and their pros and cons but at this point, it's more of an emotional decision, but I would like you to tell me what made you buy one or the other....
Thanks

Have a look at the Savage weather warrior with the new accustock, i love my new .223 and a friend owns a .270 ,i think the new accustocks have sorted any "flex" problem with the synthetic stock, and havnt heard of one not shooting extremely well out of the box, everythings done floated ,bedded, and the accutrigger to boot, value for money ithink the Savages punch well above there weight.cheers.

You should give the TC Venture a look, as they are reasonably priced for what you get in the package. TC guarantees MOA accuracy with the 5R rifling that they use.

If you have a 25-06, the 270 isn't too much different, but I understand about emotional decisions.
I have a 270 that I built on a 98 Mauser, but no 25-06.
Perhaps a 30'06 would work for a heavier caliber big game rifle, with enough difference from the 25'06 to deserve a place in the safe.

Look at the Remington MODEL 7 CDL in 260. Get one of those and you are set for life.It may cost a little more , but , you will only have to do it once.

Or, go to the used gun rack and find something that's a screaming deal since it's off season.

.270, .308, .30-06....what you're shooting with it will never know the difference. Any will kill big game as well as the next. I can't see falling in love with any particular caliber, but maybe that's just me.

Any of those rifle would be good good rifles, but I would go with a Remington as that is my personal preference. The .270 is a great caliber, although I would personally like a little bigger for elk, but it sounds like a may be used for elk and not a will be used for elk, in which the .270 would work great as long as you aren't set on long shots.

I have 2 Weatherby Vanguards and I love the factory triggers on both of mine. They both shoot right about MOA or better if I do my part. One is .243 Win and the other is a .300 Win Mag. I would lean towards 30-06 as far as caliber goes. The other you suggested will work too, I just love my 30-06. Plenty of load options from 110Gr to 220 and will do most of them pretty well! However, my 30-06 M1917 loves the 165Gr bullets by Speer which is an all around sized bullet for this caliber. Not to big for deer yet big enough for elk. Anyway, Good luck and Happy Hunting! For your new rifle that is.

I would like to say this. See if you can go to a gunstore and feel the ones you like. Spend plenty of time holding them. One will speak to you and tell you it wants to come home with you. They are like puppies. You want them all, but you know you can only have one, so you pick the one that licked you first!

I hope this helps!

If those are your choices, I would go with the 308. I use a 7mm mag for hunting. I am getting too old to chase things and that rifle has dropped everything I ever shot at it with. Had one cow elk take about 3 steps but that was at about 800-1000 yards. Anyway, of the two 308s you have posted, I can't say much about Weatherby because I can't afford them. I have had and do have Marlins and have really never had anything bad to say about them. Good quality rifles in my opinion.

Whichever caliber you choose, you absolutely cannot go wrong with a Weatherby Vangaurd IMO. I love mine, and have never heard from anyone who has one and doesn't like it. I think it's the best bargain out there.

of the particular rifles you mentioned, i suggest the weatherby vanguard, in 30-06. they have a reputation for fine accuracy and howa makes a fine action. one rifle for all the big game you're likely to hunt. 150gr for deer, 180's for elk, or 165's for everything. simplicity at its' best! others may differ.

The Savage or Marlin XL-7 would be my choice in either caliber.
Same here, though I would probably go with a different chambering (like .30-06). The Savage is a little nicer and more accurate, but the Marlin is a better buy and more than accurate enough to hunt with, so I would probably go with the Marlin.

:)

I would buy the .308 over the .270 but I have a thing against the .270. Its a great cartridge, but in my opinion there are much better ones based off the .30-06 casing. Your .25-06 can just about do anything that the .270 does. The only thing that the .270 can do better is shoot a heavier bullet. That may be good for elk, but it wont kill a deer any faster. The .308 is the big target cartridge and will most likely be capable of better accuracy simply because you have more options to work with. It will kill a deer or elk as well or better than the .270 but it won't shoot quite as flat. I guess in the end you may just want to flip a coin.

Wow, that's a tall-order to decide from that list! All I can say is good luck! They're all good rifles! The Winchester, Remington and Weatherby Vanguard are fantastic firearms. The beauty of the Vanguard is that you get to see the factory target before you buy it! I would be happy with any of those three makes. Now the hard part: what caliber? What do you plan to hunt and where? Nothing wrong with a .30-06 or .270 Win as all-round hunting rounds to 500 yards. The .30-06 will take anything that most fellas will hunt in North America.

Since I am a 270 fan and used to have a vanguard in that caliber that I STUPIDLY sold when I was retarded for a day, I vote for the vanguard. It has a 24 inch barrel, is guaranteed to shoot 1 1/2 inch groups from the factory and the 270 is probably better suited for Idaho hunting since you will probably have more opportunities for longer shots there. By the way mine would shoot 1/2 inch groups with factory winchester 130 gr power points. I reloaded for it later and was able to duplicate this accuracy with nosler ballistic tips.
