I am interested in adding a centerfire rifle suppressor to the stable. Will a .308 suppressor work on a .223? If so, what are the liabilities when using the larger caliber suppressor on 22 caliber bullets? Is there much blowby? I hate to pay the tax stamp on both suppressors if the .308 will work well on .308s and .224s. Thanks!

Blowby is highly overrated. In many cases a subcaliber will be quieter than the spec'd caliber.

The main downside of using a .308 suppressor for .223 is that it's bigger than a 223 suppressor.

This has been my experience, +1

Heres a video of a 7" SBR 5.56 shooting military green tip ball ammo. Take into consideration the obnoxious blast and concussion generated by a 7" AR15 and compare it to the video. The suppressor is for 7.62 and is mounted via a simple thread adapter.

And just to give an idea of the noise created by this gun:

Watch them back to back and you will see that a 7.62 can is very effective on 5.56 guns. Most of what I believe you hear in the video of the suppressed gun is the sonic crack which is quite loud IMO. The biggest con....weight.

Most 223 and 308 can have different thread patters too 223 is typically 1/2 X 28 and 308 cans are usually 5/8 X 24.

You can get some of the quick mount cans that use a flash hider and will allow you to switch from gun to gun, but they typically run around 75 bucks each plus you have to have the barrels threaded. :barf:

You can get a silencer builder to thread a .30 cal (308) can 1/2 X 28 but your threads will be really close to your rifling. :cuss:

Get your smaller calibers threaded 5/8 X 24

Final option buy the .30 cal can with 5/8 X 24 threads and get a thread adapter that will go from a 1/2 X 28 female to a 5/8 24 male. :D

My YHM 7.62 Phantom on my SBR.

This is the Class III FFL shooting it, before I could own it, as my stamp hadn't arrived.

Click on the picture for video. (IF it works in this forum.)

Still picture. I had my Weaver 3-9x on it at the time to check load accuracy.

EDIT: That picture is so old and the the rifle has changed so much I pulled it out of the safe an took another picture as it is today.
I regularly shoot this rifle in 3-Gun Matches, both suppressed and unsuppressed.

I did the YHM route. The 7.62 can mounts to the 5.56. I only have the one suppressor. With this one I have (3) 5.56 AR's including a SBR, an AR-10, an AK, and my FN PBR.

That said a 5.56 suppressor still is on my list but the priority has been dropped to after I get an Osprey and .22 can.
