Does anyone here have a Savage stevens 311R guard gun? Trying to find out when these were made? And if they were actually bought and deployed by departments ?

I once READ in the 1980s that NYPD on a raid, SWAT had automatics, patrol had pumps, detectives got doubles.
Google finds a reference to the 311R in NYPD.

All I can find in my book is that the line was discontinued in 1989.

Should be a date-code stamp on the receiver - inside.

Todd.

Wasn't one of the points these (perhaps THE point) to be able to readily load specialty rounds?

Seems I read that back in the day when they were written-up in magazines and the inevitable "W.T.F.?!?" point of view would come up.

MC George's great photo brought that back to mind for me.

If he's your pal, let him know in the most comically-respectful way that he's about 60% to rockin' a Village People vibe in that super cool photo.

The old-school of it is a treat. Revolver, wild-west filled loops, double barrel..... TOO damn cool.

One can almost hear the "thwump" of the round falling to chamber.

Todd.

The 311 was used by Detective Bureau and Narcotics Division cops of NYPD for a long time.
The twice barrel was issued because the FTS did not believe that the average Detective was smart enough to operate a slide action gun (authority Det. Frank Dimario FTS)
They also felt that 2 rounds should be all that was necessary (sigh...)
It was neat because you could disassemble it and carry it in a gym bag or under a jacket until you reached the location.
It was hardly ever deployed, but it was fun to qualify with.
The only DB units that did not use the 311 was Central Robbery Division, which used 13.5" M37's (as did ESU). CRD did investigations as well as stakeout, and had the choice of slug or buck.
I used both, but strongly preferred the Ithaca. Having said that, the 311 was not something that i would be embarresed to have at home.
There is a whole bunch of them still at the Outdoor Range.

I have a copy- if someone wants to read it ill send it their way for free. PM address, then when you done either send it back or some other interested THR mbr...

Had to laugh... NYPD issuing double barrel poppers - when everywhere else in the country the rest of us were using basic riot guns (Mossbergs, Remingtons....). Way back when I was off duty (down here in south Florida) and met an NYPD type on vacation. Once we realized we were in the same line of work the usual comparisons about salary, off duty work, etc. soon followed... The differences between our "off-duty jobs" (which were done through the Department and then added to our paychecks after all the usual deductions, etc...) brought this response which I'll remember as long as I live... "Gee - youse can hire out your guns?" Scouts honor I had to tighten up to keep from laughing...

Anyone that cites how the NYPD did things years ago will have me smiling again - I just couldn't make this stuff up...
