What can be shot in a .327 caliber revolver?

I have been told:
.327 Federal Magnum
.32 H&R Magnum
.32 S&W long
.32-20 Winchester
.32 ACP

Is this correct? Others?
thanks.

Scratch 32/20 that's a tapered bottleneck case.

I have fired 32acp out of both my 327 single seven and my 4.2 sp101

They go bang but accuracy is nonexistent

All but the 32-20. Don't expect the greatest accuracy w/ the shorter cartridges. It's a long jump to the barrel.

It doesn't matter this is largely a myth. My guns are phenomenally accurate with longs, especially wadcutters.

The acp probably shoots like garbage from a combination of excessive headspace, undersized bullets and unsupported case.

Add standard 32 s&w (shorts) and no go on 32-20.

Not worth it IMO on the shorts, I just load the longs lighter if I feel inclined to shoot something at that low of a power level.

My 327s are also accurate with longs and h&rs.

I was speaking more of the 32ACP. But mine are slightly less accurate w/ the 32 S&W cartridges as well. Nothing major but it's measurable.

In my experience the 32acp's group fairly well but not to point of aim. It's not off much. Mainly use the 32 S&W longs and the 32 H&R magnums.

I own or have owned a half dozen 32 H&R and 327 magnum revolvers. 32acp will fire every time in some, sometimes in others, and never in some. It depends on exact firing pin length or some other technical thingie like that.

The 32 sw, 32 swl, and 32 hr will shoot out of any 327 revolver just fine. I shoot the longs and magnums out of mine often and the accuracy doesn't seem to suffer.

As Tallbad said, 32 ACP in a revolver depends on the revolver. The 32 ACP rim is 0.045" thick while the .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Mag, and .327 Fed Mag have a rim that is 0.055" thick. That puts the primer 0.010" farther away from the firing pin so some revolvers will only lightly strike the primer in a .32 ACP and fail to fire.

32 H&R Magnum ammunition (1.075" case length) should not fit in a 32 S&W Long chamber (0.920" case length).

Pressures are higher on 32 H&R Magnum than 32 S&W Long so not advisable to shoot 32 H&R Magnum in a gun designed for 32 S&W Long for the most part.

32 magnum is purposely longer than 32long.

It's the same as 38 special and 357, or 44 special and 44 magnum.

The newer more powerful loading was put in a longer case, so that people wouldn't load the new ammo into an old gun made for the weaker round and blow it up. They may try, but the round will be too long and won't fit.

I was hesitant at first to try it BUT you can modify a S&W model 30-1 or 31-1 to safely chamber and fire the 32 H&R round. If you search enough you will see that folks have been doing this for some time with no problems. I have a 30-1 with a 2" barrel and a 31-1 with a 3" barrel that have been converted.

32magnum is still as milktoast as a cartridge can get. A true magnum in name only.

The only revolvers I could envisage the cartridge harming would be some of the late 19th century top break Saturday night specials

I agree about the "magnum" designation. Some folks older and wiser than me have stated that even 32 S&W long can be safely loaded to perform like the 32 H&R .

I think the practice is to make a case longer to ensure that the load is confined to a gun intended for it. Legacy guns in 32 SWL might not be up to the pressures of 32 H&R Magnum performance levels.

I respect the 32 H&R mag because it is the most powerful gun I have that holds 6 shots and is readily concealable and comfortable to carry, while subsonic and capable of being shot without hearing protection (I tried it, although unintentionally). My 32 SWL model 30-1 is another favorite but is too nice and too valuable to be hotrodding ammo for it. I ALWAYS shoot only what is stamped on the barrel.
