Thru a family inheritence, I recently acquired the following rifle:
Interarms Mark X-- .338 win.

On the left side of the barrel it is marked ".338 win."--doesn't say "win. mag.", just "win". In removing the barrel and action, from the stock (absolutely filthy) the bottom of the barrel is marked "Federal". Based on this info am I to assume this is a .338 win. mag---or .338 Federal (doubt it) but need to ask. After hours of elbow grease, the rifle shows very nicely. Very good deep black finish on the metal, medium oil gloss finish, on a stock exhibiting a unique grip and a "roll over" cheek piece. Bore is bright, with prominent lands and grooves. Action is obviously some breed of Mauser. Trigger is smooth (small creep) with a break at around 3 1/2 #'s. I know absolutely NOTHING about this rifle--or the round- .338?. Help me out here guys. I been at this shooting thing quite awhile--just really un-informed on this particular cannon. Thanks:confused:

".338 win."--
It's a .338 Winchester Magnum.

Back when Interarms was still in business and selling Mark-X Mauser rifles & actions, there was no other .338 available except the .340 & 338-378 Weatherby.

Federal Ordinance (also out of business) may have made or sold the barrel blank for use on a Mark-X action build by an amateur gunsmith.

It's most likely a .338 Winchester Magnum and, like you, due to the age of the rifle, unless somebody before you had it re-chambered, I doubt very much that it's a .338 Federal. Still, as others have opined, better safe than sorry and a check with the local gunsmith wouldn't hurt.

If somebody had it rechambered to .338 Federal they would have had to do it in the last four years.

That cartridge only came out in 2006.

Hey you're not the only one confused - just today in a gun shop I saw a Sako 85 chambered in what the tag claims is ".370 Mag" - the bore looks about .370 to me, too....New one on me.

But yeah, I'd be 99% certain that that was a .338 Win Mag.

Some kind of Mauser you say. Does yours have the trigger guard magazine release in the picture, or a button on the side above the front root of the trigger guard? The entire manual is available for download, albeit the older style. I also have the newer style, but not scanned, and the Reminton 798 or USSG Z98 manual will also work in a pinch.

Edit: Model pictured is without the adjustable trigger.

gkdir, I would venture to say that it's definately chambered in 338 Win Mag. Try looking at the bolt face, if it's a .532" it a belted magnum, if it's a .473" then it's based off of a 06 case which I seriously doubt. If you want to absolutely certain take a chamber cast with cerrosafe.

While not popular here it's Sako's version of 9.3mm......the 370 Sako Mag

375H&Hish power form a 30-06ish case.

Gotta be the first to say ...

338 federal is short action. You could tell!!! The throw length on the bolt would be exactly the same as a 308, 7mm-08, 243.

Would love to post pics--if I could figure out how to do it. Tried didn't work:banghead:

In reference to "Pale Horse" inquirey as to mag release location--it is in the trigger well
