Please forgive my ignorance, but is there such a thing as a 338 win mag improved out there? I am looking for a way to beter my 338 without a total refit. thanks a bunch.

What are you looking to do? Are you planning to ream the chamber to a different neck/shoulder angle?

There so probably dozens of wildcats available that are some form of improved 338.

What is your budget?

New rifle or a new barrel for your old rifle?

Is you current rifle a 338 Win Mag? There is the 340 Weatherby. The 338 Lapua. Remington offers an Ultra Mag in 338.

We need more details of what you want.

I can say that whatever you do, an improved version of the 338 will likely be a handloading proposition.

"Improved" cartridges are defined as having a sharper shoulder than the original case. Standard cartridges can be fired in "improved" chambers to form the cases -- no special forming charge needed.

The actual improvement in velocity is minimal. And your .338 Win Mag already has a 25-degree shoulder.

You may be searching for a solution to a problem that doesn't in reality doesn't happen to present it's self. Peresonaly, any Wildcat gains are offset by the headaches. I've owned more than a few and I'm down to two. My two cents worth..........Essex

The best, and only way to better a .338 is through careful handloading, load development, and premium bullet selection.

It will already do anything that needs to be done with that caliber of rifle.

If you need more, you need a bigger rifle.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of improvement is needed?

I am thinking along the line of 243 win to 243 win A.I. The end result I am looking for is that the rifle can still use the parent round it was chamber for while squeezing out a little more case capacity/velocity and brass life. Any help is greatly appreciated.
