I purchased a marlin 336 in .35 Remington from a neighbor back a few months ago. With it came one green and yellow box of Remington 200 grain core-lokt soft points. Here’s a link to the rifle.

Since I can’t find brass I would like to shoot up this box of ammo and reload the empties. I do not have large rifle primers but do have large pistol.

Does anyone have a recipe for .35 remington low velocity low pressure load? Something I could load with pistol bullets or even cast or plated? Just looking for a fun low power plinking round. I have the following powders:

Bullseye
Trail boss
Win 231
Unique
Vihtavuori 3N37
Blue dot
2400
H110
Win 296
Imr 4227

Thanks for the help everyone!

I have a great blue dot lp load in 30-30 so I would be very inclined to try that first. I think 2400, bluedot, and 4227 are great options for what your trying to do. 4227 shot good in 308 light loads. 2400 was wonderful in 6.5x55. The faster powders will require higher peak pressures for the 1500ish fps your probably wanting. I'd be using a 158, 170 or 180 cast boolit.

How about a published load from the 1955 Ideal No.40?

I have some Berrys thick plated 158 grain flat points on my reloading bench now. It says on the box the max velocity is 1500 fps.

15 grains of 2400 should work then right?

I appreciate everyone’s response!

I’m not at home, so I can’t photo the pages.
But, Lee#2 has a bunch of cast bullet loads that can be used with Jacketed bullets.
Also, Lyman Cast bullet manual.
Just don’t use the lowest charges as jacketed bullets have a higher engraving pressure, and higher bore friction; so take a bit more to start and not stick in the bore.

Unique and #2400 will be your friends!

I'd definitely try the starting load and ladder up a grain to see what happens. Bullet failure being the worst outcome. I believe your crimp will be the biggest factor.

Just load the minimum published load of any powder you have. There's lots of data out there. I have a Marlin 336 and a Remington model 8 and 81....all in 35 Rem caliber.

I've gotten very accurate loads with pistol bullets and lightish loads.

Ended up going with Cast Performance Bullet Company’s 200 grain hard cast gas checked bullets getting pushed by 15 grains of 2400 and a large pistol primer.

they are much more mild than the factory Remington ammo. Really great shooters. They feed much better than the factory ammo. Probably because the brass is all polished and slicked up now.

Anyone have a guess as to how often will I need to trim these these cases if I stick with these light loads?

Thanks for all the load selection help and double checks from everyone!

Dan

I’ve been saving ammo my entire life. Too cheap to shoot it or afraid it’s collectible or something.

I’ve read a couple of Slamfires posts explaining how loaded ammunition really does have an expiration date and the brass does weaken over time if stored as loaded cartridges.

I held on to that box for a couple months and finally decided to just shoot it. Hopefully that Hornady brass hits the market soon. It’s past due at this point.

No way I would shoot up 200 Gr Core-Lokt ammo just to get brass to load, I’d search for brass, it’s out there.

ETA: those 200 grain Core-Lokt cartridges are potent. They give a good kick and hit hard! I fired off 10 of them at my sisters house just shooting old chunks of lighter pine. The power to weight ratio combined with the easy handling of that rifle is really impressive. I see why the combo of the 336 chambered in .35 Remington was so popular.
