Don't sweat it as long as you've got enough bullet shank in the neck and the round fits your magazine and feeds. Your rifle may have a slightly different chamber than mine, but I doubt you'll be able to get very close to the lands at all with either bullet.

What powder do you intend to use?

I loaded them with 55 grains of imr 3031. Both bullets that load. We will be testing them out tomorrow . The 200 grainers oal was 3.340. The 180 grain was slightly shorter. We'll see in the morning.

Lyman's 49th gives a OAL of 3.045 for the 180 grain Jacketed FSP and 3.045 for the 200 grain Jacheted RN.

3.340 sounds a little long, I use 2.470 for the 35 Remington (Speer 180 grain FSP).

I have that manual but these bullets have long sharp points unlike those two in the lyman manual. We are starting long and will work it in till we find the sweet spot hopefully. Our bench and chrono is set up 20 feet from the front door of our deer camp where our loading gear is set up at. So we can adjust and shoot more test rounds immediately.

Good luck and safe shooting

Jim

PS: Have you done the dummy round test to see if they will chamber in your rifle?

Yes, they chamber fine. Barnes and nosler website do not have these grain bullets listed. I know one if them is new this year, maybe both?

Sorry, but I had to ask. I use the Hornady L-N-L OAL gauge each time I use a new bullet.

At 100 yards with 3 shot groups, it's one jagged hole with both loads. We also loaded some test loads for a 300RUM. Nosler accubond 165gr and barnes ttsx 165gr. 6 of each with 7828(94 grains) and H1000(99gr) for a total of 24 rounds. All nosler bullets are 3.600 and all barnes are 3.535. Again, one jagged hole at 100 yards. Im finding it hard to believe that several new loads shoot this well on the first try. Maybe we move out further with the RUM and try 300 yards and see if they are still tight.

Also 35 whelen loads were 2700fps average with the 200gr and 2750 average with the 180gr. The .300RUM loads were 3400fps average with the 7828 and 3450fps average with the H1000.

I'm shooting 225-grain Accubonds, and Re15 is THE powder for the Whelen, IMO---at least with the 225s and 250s. I'm getting almost 2700 fps and could get more if I wanted to push it, but the truth is it wouldn't matter in the practical sense and you really don't get that much increase in velocity per charge increase with this cartridge...I think that's one of the reasons it's so easy to keep velocities so consistent with the Whelen.
