Howdy all.
I have a brand new Rossi 92 357-38 and since I'm retired my reloading itchy is full time.
I bought from everglades bullets some 38/357 FMJ 130 GR to start, here is my dilemma.
My powder stocks are 2 brands for now, Trail Boss and Titegroup, in my books (Sierra 7º, Lyman 49º) and Hodgon website the 130 gr FMJ bullets for .357 are not listed.
Therefore, I can't develop a mild load for my wife and I at the range.
What will be an starting weight powder to use with my bullets.
Thank you all, in advance

Henry.

I would think you could use 125 gr jacketed data and start at the bottom end. 5 gr bullet weight is not a drastic weight change in low to medium .38/.357. 4% bullet weight increase would be about 8-10% increase in pressure.

if you’re really worried about it, use the data on Hodgdon for 140 gr XTP.

Trailboss has the same loading directions for every cartridge, fill case to about the base of where the bullet will seat, weigh that charge, starting load is 70% of that (multiply by .7). It'll be very light. Trailboss is good with a full case- do not compress.

Hodgdons online database has data for both powders under a 125 gr cast lead bullet. Use the minimum charges for the 125gr under you 130gr as you starting point and work up to the velocity you want. I would stay a few 10th under the max show just to be safe

Technically that setup instructions is only valid for rifle cartridges (per Hodgdon/IMR). Yes it will work for most pistol cartridges but not all. A full case in 45 Colt and heavy bullet and you can exceed SAAMI MAP. 38 Special with light bullets gets very close to SAAMI MAP with a full case of Trailboss. Again the OP can do that in this specific case but that is not always the case. Be careful as usual.

I just double checked, the current data doesn't differ for pistol or rifle.

Hmmm... maybe you're right. I remember is more explicitly say that the procedure was for rifles but that is clearly not the case. I guess I implied the procedures was for rifle cartridges only from the first paragraph of the page you link but in re-reading it I may be taking it too literally. Carry on, I seem to be in error.
