My wife and I recently visited a local gun range where we shot several of our collections. She has a High Standard .357 and we seemed to notice a little "gas backflow" in our noses and a lot of fire discharge. Also the extractor would not push the used shells from the chambers, we had to push them out with a screwdriver. This was the first time I noticed this. The shells in question are 145 gr. Winchester silver tip HP's. I've never used this "hot" of a shell before. Is it too much for the gun? What factory load do you think I should use in this gun? Perhaps a 125 gr?

Is that an 1980's-era High Standard, made by Dan Wesson Arms?

I owned a DWA back in the 1980's and it would stick when extracting magnums. I finally got tired of pounding the rod against the table and got rid of the gun.

The Silvertip is not a hot round in any of its handgun calibers. :)
You might want to have the barrel/cylinder gap checked.

I dont know Big D, G&A mag shows 1340, 1387, and 1423fps from 4,6 and 8 3/8th and thats only 13grains shy of 158. I wouldnt shoot them in that gun.

Thanks for the information. In answer to starter52, yes this is an 80's era . 357. It was my fathers. It has operated successfully with loads lighter than 145 gr. but I don't remember which one. I think as timothy75 suggests I'll try a lesser load (maybe 125 gr.) and then if we still experience some "blowback" (for lack of a better term) I'll have the gun checked as DPRIS suggests. Nice education page from Jim March.
