Hello,

I have heard great things about the 357Sig (maybe the P 229 or P 226?)
and that they are accurate and versatile and accurate and powerful enough with range for hunting animals as large as white tailed deer.

I hunt with all types of long-guns and bows and pistol hunt but always w/ revolvers. I had never even considered an auto loading pistol for deer or hog hunting, but a friend who is a master hunter who has both a 500 S&W revolver and Thompson Center and the 357 sig said his favorite pistol to hunt w/ was the 357 sig (I think P229) with like a 3" or 4" barrel, and that you could shoot accurately out to 100 yards, plus it's a great all around carry gun w/ high capacity mags (Best of both Worlds)
Is this realistic as a HUNTING pistol?

What would you recommend?
I have a Super Red Hawk 454/45 w/ 7.5" brl and a S&W 386 XL Hunter 357 mag w/ 6"brl (Scandium lightweight) already. I am looking for another with a 4-6" barrel in 44, 357 or another caliber.
My friend did warn that ammo for the 357sig is hard to find. How hard? Where would i find a 357sig and ammo? Which model?
Advice?

No way in hell would I use a 226 or 229 to hunt with. Yeah they are accurate guns for their purpose but their purpose is as a sidearm and not accurate enough (especially at 100 yards) to be suitable for hunting.

I've killed thousand of hogs (hog farmer) I wouldn't worry much about caliber for a 400 lbs hog as long as the shot placement is good 9mm is plenty.

Not sure id want .357 sig for hunting. i prefer 10mm for hogs ....that aside ammo is easy enough to find. I can find it at my local lgs and walmarts.

I have a xd in .357 and a steyr m40 with a .357 barrel and a m&p 40 pro with a .357 barrel. Great round for what it is. Feels like 9mm +p+ to me but really loud.

Sig just introduced the 10mm Hunt Ready P220 at the 2015 SHOT Show. This is a single-action only pistol, with the Elite Beavertail, and front cocking serrations. The Hunt Ready P220 comes with the SIG SAUER Romeo1 mini red-dot sight already installed, it comes with black G-10 Piranha grips, and a Kryptek Highlander camo pattern finish.

Hog?

I guess the 147gr .357 Sig loads, like the DPX variety, would do quite well on hogs.

How about Elmer Keith's favorite?

Perhaps you may want to consider a Smith and Wesson model 29 / 629 .44 mag. It has worked for handgun hunting for decades with the Lyman 429421 245 grain lead semi-wadcutter.

Thanks to all

Thanks,

think I will stick to revolvers in 357 or my 454/45 for hunting.
appreciate the advice , especially about the 220 10mm hunter model; I am not sure what it means to be a "single action only" semi auto? What the heck?
