357 sig popularity.

Has the 357 sig cartridge finally secured a place in the gun-owning community, like the 9mm, .40, and .45? I keep seeing the prices of the ammo go down, but the availability in my area is still pretty anemic . Sold my G31 and G32 because of that, but thinking of buying the XD version.

It would be interesting to see "overall" ammo sales.

You have to believe that once you get beyond 22, 38, 9mm, 40 and 45, most calibers are probably a "drop in the bucket" in comparison.

That said, it seems calibers hang on forever. Must be high profit in ammo.

I'm not implying the 357SIG isn't a good one or that it doesn't sell, just in comparison to the main ones.

I think the round is on it's way out. It will always hang around, but I'm not running out to get one.

Has always seemed like a good caliber.

I have to say I am thinking it should be more popular then it is. No experience with it though. Any of you guys own one? How's the recoil? Accuracy? I am very curious because somewhere down the road I am thinking about owning one. Gun shop people seem to like em. They have pretty good stopping power, very close to the .40- Any info on this thread would be helpful.

The .357Sig is a hard round to find. Even with the TNHP going to it, most gunstores are not stocking it. They say there is no demand.
When you do find it, it costs around $3 more per box (ball) than .45ACP.
Not good for people who like to burn a lot of ammo at the range.

I find all this funny.
The reason is, that many say the 10mm is expensive and hard to find. Here, 10mm ammo can be found at any gunshop at the same price or cheaper than .45ACP.

I have one in a Sig P229 and a Glock 31... used to have a Beretta Cougar 8357.
This is a very accurate round in these guns - and since the round is fairly modern, there are very few dogs in the bunch ( see below for the "bunch" I've shot ). Recoil is snappy, but nothing close to a 357 magnum

It's standard issue for the VASP. Gun is Sig 229. Not sure what the load is.

How's the recoil? Accuracy?

Recoil is in the hot 9mm range. Accuracy is excellent, at least out of my SIG's it is. I keep "hearing" that its recoil is harsh, its loud, and flashy. I dont know what these people are shooting, but I havent found this to be the case, and I shoot them at least once a week, indoors and out. Ammo used is mostly Speer Lawman, Gold Dots, and my own reloads using AA#7.

I also "hear" its a pain to reload. I havent found that to be the case either. One more step, either lube, and clean, or use a .40S&W carbide size die first, then the 357SIG die. No set back with a good crimp, or a load that fills the case, or both.

The .357Sig is a hard round to find.

It's readily available online, and around here, in most gun shops. If you buy in bulk, and compare factory ammo to factory ammo, its only a couple of bucks more than 9mm ball. Its actually cheaper to shoot with than the hotter 9mm ammo if you practice with what you carry. Ammoman has Speer Lawman, in both 357SIG and .45ACP, both for $239/1000 delivered.

I'd agree that recoil is a non-issue, but it is loud and quite flashy...

What ammo are you using that has a lot of flash? I'll steer clear of it.

Perceived loudness may be a personal thing. I dont find it to be any louder than anything else. Then again, I dont find my SOCOM16 to be loud either, so maybe I'm deef.

I am in the process of buying one now

I found what I consider a great deal on a unfired/unisued Glock police trade in with Trijicon night sights and 3 Mags for $400. I will receive confirmation on Monday and be getting it late this week or early next if all goes well. I love the idea of this round and would love to see a carbine chambered for this round. Idealy I would like to see Glock make a carbine that would have magazine interchageability with their pistols. I will say however if Berreta ever decides to make this an option I would buy both their rifle and pistol. The other obvious choice for this combo in either brand would be, say it with me now, 10mm.

Another .357 Sig user now is the North Dakota State Highway Patrol. They have adopted the Sig P226 in this caliber recently. Myself, I have the cartridge in several of our handguns (XD-40, Glock 23, USP-40C and a Sig 2340 sigpro) but they all started out as .40 S&W guns. A simple barrel swap and you can go to .357 Sig and back again to .40 S&W with nothing more to change out. Fun caliber to shoot but due to the price increase, I tend to stick with the .40 S&W barrrels in the wife's gun and mine as well.

I haven't found it to be loud and flashy either. I use the Remington 125gr JHP. I just bought some Triton High velocity 125gr JHP, which might change my mind though. Recoil is not a problem at all in my HK USPc.

i dont think it would touch 40 45 and 9mm ammo sales simply because of the amount of guns that shoot them. but guns in 357 sig seem to be very popular and i wouldnt be surprised to see a increase in the number of guns chambered for it
