.357 Silvertips?

Not sure, but I think he may have been describing the characteristic of the exit hole in the wet newsprint. That's the way I took it, but I've never studied holes in wet newsprint before so I wouldn't know what to look for.

The 9mm STHP shot great in both my P7 and G34.

I'm excited just cause I want the bullet to load for some neat rounds to keep in a shadow box with my 19-3!

Silvertips..

As a long time handloader, I rarely shoot factory ammo .
Reading the advertisements for the Silvertips, I noticed the rounds used lighter than usual bullet weights.
Made a mental note to keep an eye out & see if Win. started offering the Silvertip bullets for sale as a Hand loading component.

They did.. for awhile.. but they were considerably more expensive than other copper JHP bullets.. I waited, hoping Midway would have a sale & I'd try some.

Either it didn't happen, or I missed it.:fire:

Didn't see any for years, then saw they were available in some select rifle calibers.. Never did get to give them a try.. but they were available, for awhile anyway..:banghead:

Silvertip availibility

after making above post, went to Midway to see if the are still made.
They have component bullets..all on backorder

actually says "out of stock-no backorder"

for loaded rounds, Had 380 in stock, & though calibers 32, 9mm, 38,
38 super, 357, 40, 41 Mag, 44 spec & 44 Mag, 45acp & 45 GAP, 45 Lc were shown, all had the same "out of stock-no backorder" warning listed

Darn.

Well

At least we have some feedback! I will be on the lookout for the Silvertips when they show up!

Winchester usually makes a run of .357 Magnum Silvertips ever 2 years now. When asked recently they said they will be making them sometime later this year. Put yourself on the automated email reminder list and when they are in stock you will know.

Golden Sabers are the only round you will ever need to bring out the efficacy of any handgun. However, they do seem dated now when compared to Hornady FTX rounds.

Golden Sabers are great in smaller calibers and short barrel 357mag. Golden sabers are watered down in 357 mag. They will over expand in a hot 357mag load from a 4" or 6" barrel. You buy a 357mag for the extra velocity, not to shoot a 38spl +P load with 357mag stamped on the box.

Me, I shoot more factory fodder than reloads. Most all my reloads are for hunting. I don't think a shooter can do much better than the Silvertips, in any caliber. In the standard pressure .38's, the Silvertip lacks a little in penetration, but it will for sure and for certain open up. Never met a Silvertip I didn't like.

SilverTips are a 25-30 year old technology, similar to the Federal Hydra-Shock.
Great in its time, and still better than FMJ, but how much better?
Who knows?
If something like HST is available in that caliber, it would seem to be a far better choice.
I have some SilverTip 10mm, because there are not too many modern 10mm rounds that have been upgraded (yes, I have some Georgia Arms rounds as well)...
But I don't carry my 10mm. I believe that other common carry rounds have evolved farther, because of demand.

I think you stated the intended purpose of the .357 Medium Load Golden Saber quite well. That's how Remington promoted it.

I'd use it in a three-inch 357 if I couldn't find Speer Gold Dot Short Bbl. ammo. In a longer barrel, yeah, I'd use more powerful ammo if .357 was warranted.

This is why we have to wait 2 years for a run of ammo. Just because it's old doesn't make it bad. Just look at the FBI Load, it's still a very good choice for SD and it's way older than the Silvertip ammo is.

Yes from what I understand, the Silvertip expands very well.

I like the 145 grain bullet weight and good velocity and energy at 1350 + - FPS.

I've had some fears of 125 grain Federal 357B under-penetrating and being too loud. The Silvertips load seems a good mix of bullet weight but still high energy.

Perhaps the Barnes factory loaded all copper 140gr .357 would be a suitable and more readily available replacement for the 145gr silvertip?
