Ok, now before I start. I dont care what caliber you like. I dont care if you dont hunt deer with a handgun. I only want a recomendations on which 357 mag is most effective on Deer 125lbs to around 200lbs(not frequent).
I hunt in S. Indiana. I am going to use a TC Contender early model. It has a 10 inch barrel. I am pretty accurate out to 50 yards(still working on that part)
Our hunting areas are woods, woodlined fields. Our normal shot is around 35 yards
My question is, What would be a good round to effective one to drop a deer. Not wound So i will have to track(I am lazy). I know shot placement is crucial. I am looking for the round now. This way come season I will be ready.
I know I will quit reading these replies. They all seem to evolve into stories and hear say. Or some one will hijack it for there own questions. So let me thank you for your help now.

If'n I'd seen it earlier, I'd have linked you. :D Not a problem.

My favorite .357 hunting handgun is a Ruger 6.5" Blackhawk. The thing is ACCURATE and takes really hefty handloads I wouldn't wanna shoot in lesser revolvers.:D I own a contender, but don't have a .357 barrel for it. I shoot .30-30 on game with it. Easy to put a scope on, though.

My favorite handload right now is REALLY warm. I'm not going to list the weight, but it's AA#9 behind a 180 grain Hornady XTP hollow point. Man, that load is accurate, but it sure pushes the limit. I have a little stiction in the empties when I'm ejecting them, probably ought to back it down a little, but it doesn't really crater the primers. It's making 785 ft lbs, but I would have to look up the velocity because I can't remember. For any more power I'd have to go to my .45 colt, put it that way.

Buffalo Bore has some pretty mighty claims for hot ammo. I intend to check those out in my carbine sometime. The claims are pretty fantastic, hotter than I can handload, I know that!

Only deer I've shot with the gun was with a 158 grain cast gas check (Lee mold) SWC in front of 14.5 grains of Aliant 2400 that puts up about 760 ft lbs. The deer fell quite dead. Range was well inside 50 yards. I got total penetration through both shoulders. I haven't used the 180 on deer, but I don't think I'd be disappointed. I used that same SWC load on another smaller doe in a carbine at 80 yards and results were amazing. I only hit lung tissue, she didn't go 20 yards before expiring.

Here's some reading on the Buffalo Bore stuff. http://www.gunblast.com/MilesFortis-AKChurch_BuffaloBore.htm This was tested independently by that site and I calculate 909 ft lbs for the 180 grain load.:what:

Thank you for your reply. I looked into the buffalo bore round. I think I may order some to try. I think Cabellas has them.
You mentioned you have a 30-30 on your Thompson. I am already looking for one of them. Can you give me some of your results, and which barrel length are you using? How bad is the recoil?.
My 13 year old, shoots as well as I do and dont want to buy somthing that will scare him away from it. Thanks

I have the 12" TC Hunter barrel that has an integrated muzzle brake on the end of it, actually a compensator the way it's designed. It works VERY well. I shoot handloads out of it, petty hot, and it recoils about like .38 wadcutter out of my M10 S&W heavy barrel. However, you'd best have your ear protection on. When I first started using it, I shot a nice 8 point out of a box blind, had to kind of lean out at an angle to get on him. The blast off the compensator came back in the blind. Man, that night sitting around the fire telling hunting stories I'm going "eh? WHAT? Whadya say?" :D Now, I put my muffs on top of my head so all I have to do to shoot is reach up and lower 'em over my ears.

Factory Winchester 150 grain flat nose clock around 1871 fps/1166ft lbs, standard deviation of 29.78 for six shots. It's making 1565 fps/816 ft lbs at 100 yards and 1325 fps/585 ft lbs at 200. A 150 yard zero sees it 2.72" high at 100, 7 inches low at 200 yards.

My favorite handload is 33.5 grains of IMR3031 behind a 150 grain Nosler ballistic tip. Mean velocity is 1989 fps, standard deviation for a five shot string is 20.64, mean energy 1315 ft lbs at the muzzle. At 100 yads it's making 1815 fps/1097 ft lbs, 200 yards it's 1663 fps/922 ft lbs. Sighted for a 175 yard zero, it's 3" high at 100, 2.5" low at 200. Sighted for a 150 yard zero it's about 2" high at 100, 4.8" low at 200. The Nosler bullet expands readily at these velocites and holds together well on hog. This load will shoot 1.5" off sandbags at 100 yards with a 2x taper dot reticle scope with 4moa dot. What I do is at 100 yards, 4moa dot, I hold the POA at the top of the dot. Not necessary for hunting, but when I wanna shoot a coke can at 100 yards, this puts me pretty much dead on at 100 with a 150 yard zero sight in.

As you can see, using a spitzer boat tail Nosler Ballistic Tip with good BC really wakes this caliber up in the contender. I've been impressed with the kills I've made, longest of which was only 75 yards. With this load at 200 yards you still have plenty of energy, though the velocity is down to about the minimum for good bullet expansion. This load is a true 200 yard load. Since most of my shots will be inside 100, likely (field position limits my accuracy much past that), I feel it's a good load for the gun.

I love the hunter barrel and would suggest you look for one. The compensator is really effective and taming the recoil. The muzzle blast is sharp, but hearing protection solves that.

Thanks for your advice. Looks like a 12 Hunter is on top of my list:)
I have been looking at all the auctions. Just couldnt decide which way
I really wanted to go. I was leaning to the 30-30. I just have not found
many people around here shooting the TC. Getting REAL advice around here is scarce. Most people I know of are going by rifle experience. So I really appriciate your help.

.357 on Deer?

I have killed several deer with a .38cal 148gr LSWC, but that was self defense.
For about a year I have been playing with Hornady 140gr HP/XTP bullets ahead of various powders, coming to 9.3grs of Unique. I shoot a 4" Ruger Security Six (thats why the quick powder) but you may want to try something a little slower, like 2400, in your TC. (I know its dirty, but it's consistant)
Real men like the 158gr bullet and I think its a good load, but the 140 shoots flat as does the 125gr bullet but dosn't get unstable if you abuse it. The 158gr is much more stable under high pressure but it drops more than I like. Mainly, I have not been able to cook up anything more accurate at 75 yards for my worn out old Ruger than the load I first mentioned and at more than 75 yards I probably wouldn't shoot anyway

I've tried using unique in .357 and even in four inch guns I get a lot more out of H2400. In fact, I load +P .38s with 2400 and get better results than unique. It gives a longer pressure peak even in shorter barrels than unique and, therefore, I get better velocities at a given approximate peak pressure.

Only reason I bothered with Unique was trying to get less flash/bang in a decent load. I went back to 2400 for the hotter loads.

I used to have a .357 Magnum Pump Rifle called a "Timber Wolf" by ISI. Wish I still had it, it would have been a nice Deer rifle I'd imagine.

I have used 180 gr XTP's out of a 4" Ruger GP 100 at close range on hogs and they worked VERY well. Good penetration, expansion, etc.

I also use a TC Contender super 14" in 30-30 on deer. My fav load has been 125 Nosler BT's over IMR 4198. Shoots under 1" at 100 yds and I've gotten really good penetration, good expansion and good, clean kills with it. My longet has been 175 yds! Complete penetration and DRT! Can't beat that!
