That's the key - practicality. Natman summed it up pretty well, I think. The 444 fits your original criteria best.

Again, the Ruger #1 is a special rifle. In my opinion, anyway. To have it sitting there, in the safe or cabinet, only to be shot a couple of times a year (during moose season), just isn;t "practical" for such a great rifle. Get one in a 25-06 (or anything similarly apt for smaller game) and make a deer and range shooter proud.

.375 H&H. Think 30.06 (has similar range and trajectory). Now double it. It's a lot of cartridge.:eek:
 
Went out today for a quick sight in... Going hunting next week... Cloverleaf group at 25 yards, and 1/2" group at 50. Iron sights. Offhand.

The recoil was not bad at all, for such a huge bullet. I used the leverloution ammo, since that was all they had at the LGS, and I saved the rest if the box for next week.
