I had a long dry spell of international work, so no shooting. Finally I got a chance to hit the range today. So I picked my favorite round the 38/44 and grabbed the first 2 38/44's that came out of the safe (probably because they were the last two shoved in the safe).
So here are the results. All shooting was done 50 shots offhand at 15 yards.
My observation is that the 4" is harder to shoot well because the sight picture is not as clean. I need to blacken the front sight as I was getting some glare. The Outdoorsman shoots better and is easier to see the sights well. I found that the sights were way off on the OD, so I adjusted them when I came home. Messing with pre-war sights is NOT something you do at the range. Too many small screws to loose.
If you are interested the 4" is an early post war Heavy Duty, maybe 51 or 52 but I have not lettered it. The Outdoorsman is an early one, I think 1935 but again I have not lettered it. I will get that done eventually. It has been refinished and I put the magna's on it instead of the plastic service grips it had. Great triggers on the both of them but the 4" was better in DA mode.
For not shooting for many months, I was ok with the offhand work. I had not been lifting any weights in a while so my arm strength is way down. I need to get back on a regiment of lifting to make it work better. After 800 odd rounds I was a bit tired.
Trailboss is an excellent load and in general I think it will be my default plinker loads. These loads are above book max so don't copy mine unless you are shooting them in a 38/44 and even then you are doing it at your own risk!
I found Trailboss to be more or less equal accuracy to titegroup, but both were definitely better then Universal Clays.
Well I need to start trying to shoot every week and get back into the swing of things. Now I need to go switch the tumbler to polish and get ready for the next round of reloading.
