Locally I can find .38 +P every where, but I am having a time finding .38 sp for plinking. I am cautious about +p ammo. But I was considering shooting it in a .357 mag Uberti single action. What do you guys think? Should there be anything to worry about?

PS... I am trying to keep the cost down. I am strongly considering reloading.

Factory +P is loaded to around 18,000 PSI. Maximum allowable pressure for the 38 Special is 21,000 PSI so +P is loaded well below the maximum. The 357 Magnum operates at 35,000 PSI.

Are you seriously asking if 38 Special +P is harmful to your 357 Magnum revolver?

Really?

The mythology surrounding +P continues unabated...

Certainly .38 +P will do no harm to any .357 Mag revolver.

The only thing to be aware of is, the shorter .38 Spl cases will leave hard carbon rings in the longer .357 chambers.

You need to really clean it out well with a bronze bore brush & solvent before switching back to .357 Mag ammo.

Otherwise, it can cause hard extraction, and also increase pressure if it gets bad enough to keep the .357 case mouth from expanding to release it's grip on the bullet.

yeah, that was what I was asking. The reason is, after purchasing the weapon, the store owner seriously said that I should not shoot a .38 sp +P round... he would not recommend it. Therefore the question. Did not know the ballistics figured you guys would know.

He was limited on ammo that day, and I think he was really pushing the $27 box of cowboy load 38 specials. Did not want me to take the .38 sp +P at $18. It is rough being a greenhorn guys... we have to learn somehow.

KyRock, it's good you're asking rather than just forging ahead. Caution should be commended. As rcmodel mentioned, clean your cylinders out well if switching from a lot of 38 Special cartridge use to 357 mag cartridges. You'll be fine.
To help eliminate the carbon ring, I only shoot 357 mag-length cartidges in my revolvers. I do shoot some 38 Specials in a Marlin 1894C lever-action rifle and clean it accordingly.
Good shooting!

Yep, 38 Special +P is fine in any .357.
And when you get into reloading, .38 Special is pretty easy and among the cheapest to reload for.
