hey, well my dad has some guns, and i was curious bout them, so i've been trying to find out information on them.

ok, so heres how it is.
i have a 6 shot .38 sp revolver, double action, wooden grips, fixed sights, says "38 smith & wesson special CTG" on the side.

has a 6 digit number on the face of the cylynder when you open it, and 5 digit on the interior of the frame, right below where the barrel starts

now i was reading some posts about other smith and wesson .38's and some people said that there should be a serial nimber or model number or something in the butt.

but mine doesnt have that, instead theirs a ring on the butt, like the ones on rifles where you hook a sling.

so any info would be helpful, thanks.

What you have sounds like an M&P Victory model, made for WW2. Serial number will be stamped on the underside of the butt. Numbers you see on the cylinder are assembly numbers.

oh this is a picture of the gun, in case that would help

well like i said, theirs a attached to the bottom, and their something stamped underneath it i think but they arent numbers they look kind likeupside down 4's almost? but they arent.

Appears to be Nickel-Plated as the plating appears to be coming off in certain places - like around the cylinder thumb release.

I could be wrong, I have been wrong before!

well theres alot of pitting on the other side in the same area, it could be though, i have no idea. im trying to find some batteries for my camera so i can put mroe pictures

ok so apparently they are fours, theres one four on the left side of the ring, and two on the other. i have no idea what these mean.

You have a variant of the .38 Military & Police.
The grips could be from 1938 to 1968. Lack of a model number means pre 1957. The hammer is from 1948 or earlier. The lanyard ring means its probably from 1940 to 1945. Post the serial number,.including any letter prefix (V, S or C). replace the last two letters of ther serial number with xx when you post it to protect your privacy. I'll be able to tell you which variant it is and a better idea of the date.
