I recently found out my cousin has a chronograph and I've been wanting to get my paws on one for a good long while now. I figured why not see what my Glock 35 is made of, so it was off to his house Monday afternoon to chrono some handloads, as well well as seeing what kind of numbers DoubleTap offers, in addition to a few factory loads. I got curious and wanted to see what the often under-estimimated .40 can do from a 6" tube.

Pistol of choice: Glock 35 w/ Lone Wolf 6" barrel + 22lb recoil spring and stainless guide rod.
Outside temp: approx. 70-75 degrees.
Elevation: from what I've seen listed for the are, somewhere between 900-1000 ft above sea level.
Chronograph: Chrony F-1 at a distance of 10ft from the muzzle.

**Handloads are 1x Speer brass, CCI SP, 1.125" All handloads DID NOT exceed max charge and are safely under the 35,000 PSI mark. No pressure signs on any of the fired brass.**

As you can see, you can gain about 200 fps on average over factory loads by handloading. The exception is the 200gr pill, which is pretty big for the .40. Next time I'm going may run a few 10mm's and probably load up some 165's for the .40 as well. I'd also like to find a handload that surpasses the DT 200gr XTP.

I like the Rainier plated 165gr hollow points for the 40 S&W. I see you also use Longshot, I like 7.5 grains under the 165's and 180's. I think the 200gr bullets are a little heavy for 40 S&W, just my opinion.
I am using GLOCKs, model 23 and 27.

A 135 from a 40 can cruise, thats for sure. I wouldn't want to shoot that load on a short indoor range. At least not without a full bomb-suit. Shrapnel hurts.

WOW

1) Can you do the same from a 4" barrel?

2) If you can even get close to this from a 4" barrel, doesn't it kinda destroy all the anti-40 arguments here - at least the "forty shorty" is weak stuff?

you'll lose 100-150 fps ave.

yes longshot makes us 10mm guys work harder, luckly longshot is universialy magic for .400 bullets I've gone over 1600 with my 4" 610 I need to chrono it through my 6 1/2" gun

briang2ad, yes I will do some from a 4" barrel as well. I've long wondered why anybody would call the .40 "short and weak", but hey, it happens. I'd like to see 1500 fps from a 4", which may or may not be possible. I've been told VV 3n38 will give about 1300 fps from a 4" tube using a 165gr HP, so I'll have to try that as well. I've got plenty more handloads and factory loads I could test. Results will be posted.

I'm going to chrono some 10mm Auto from my 5" Kimber also...I'll start with DT ammo and then throw in some handloads. I figure I'll get more velocity out of it than my Glock 20.

mavracer, you may have seen this already, but here are some chrono results for the 4" and 6 1/2" barreled 610's.

I'd guess that if you really are getting 1600 fps from the 4", you'll probably get a bit over 1700 fps from the 6 1/2". I'm going to be doing some Longshot in the 10mm also.

one of the guys on 10mmtalk.com claims 1808:what: from a 6" jarvis barreled glock

PS. the 135 load is also crazy accurate

135's in a 10mm are like 90's in a 9mm; too fast for the design, and they blow up when they hit things. I had 90's generating 544 ft/lbs froma 4.7" 9mm, but that load performed very poorly in clay; I wouldn't trust it as a defensive round due to lack of penetration.

I also found 155's and 165's to be on the light side for full power 10mm. My pet load is a 180 gr. Golden Sabre at 1406 FPS from a S&W 1006 (5"). The 200+ grain pills work well, too, but they batter my Witness Compact with it's lighter weight slide.

I agree that 135's, while they sizzle, aren't designed to hold up to those speeds. Heck, even at the relatively low 1300 fps they break up like mad.

+1 to 135 not staying together great on fruit though.
155 XTPs hang together pretty well.
I use 180 golddots or XTPs for serious work.

Update

Did a couple more today using my Chrony F-1. Temp was right at 85 degrees and pretty humid. Once again, from 6" Glock 35.

No pressure signs, and no flattened primers on this handload. Somewhat stout, but great results from a .40 nonetheless considering it's a 200gr pill.
