I am going to go off the beaten path on this one. Take a peek at some Smith's. Maybe the S&W 4003...mid size, stainless, safety, reliable. Heavy though. There are quite a few used ones out there and they are relatively inexpensive ($300 range for used.)

.40 compact

Take a look at the Witness .40 compact. The manual safety can be used with the hammer down, at half cock, or fully cocked. The passive firing pin block makes it safer to carry in any of the three modes and since it is double action it can be fired from any of these once the manual safety is released. The trigger pull varies according to which position the hammer is carried in. Pick the one you're comfortable with.

If you are looking for a small CCW 40S&W check out the S&W 4040PD it has a lightweight scandium frame, 3.5"bbl and a decocker/safety.

practice

regradless of carry gun- you need to practice - want more safety - get an XD for the grip safety.

whatever you get, practice your draw / reholstering the pistol (unloaded of course)
