Do i need to be crimping my .40 S&W rounds? The instructions that came with my lee die set are universal and have a separate section for if your die set has a crimping die. I dont believe my die set has one, it is the 3 die carbide set.

I loaded up 5 rounds of 155 grain xtp's on 10 grains of blue dot. they worked (shot out of my M&P 40) fine but there was really no crimp at all. The wwb's appear to have the case taper in toward the bullet right at the end, is that a crimp or just the way they are made?

How can i tell if my seater die crimps or not? the instructions say something like "turn the die in until it touches the shell holder, then back out three full turns. then screw the seater plug in until the correct COAL is achieved. if you would like a crimp adjust the die in to achieve the desired crimp." does that mean keep screwing the die in until it starts to crimp the shell? wont that change the COAL? or do you adjust both at the same time, die in seater plug out?

You don't generally want the roll crimp like the seating/crimp die makes on any auto pistol cartridge. Just enough to remove the bell and help grip the bullet.

I use the four die set, with the Lee Factory Crimp Die as the last step using the seater only to set the bullet OAL. Loads feed fine in all my pistols.

If you wan the roll crimp like for a .357 Magnum, after you got the OAL set on your test round, you back out the seating stem and adjust the die in until you get the crimp you what, then with the ram fully up you reset the stem to where the crimped in bullet is.

Use a very light taper crimp. Your die set will do that. Just remove the bell and a touch more.

When you expand the case in the second step you put a bit of "bell" on the case to help bullet seating. If you adjust the expander down to far it will be excessive and very noticeable.

that what I do, very lite crimp with seating die, just enough to push the bell in, works great with 1K loaded so far for my .40

"...whats the bell?..." It's the bit of flaring of the case mouth to allow you to sit the bullet in the case for seating. You only need enough to fit the bullet in. It takes the place of chamfering the inside of the case mouth of a rifle case.
"...they worked..." Don't fix it.
