A couple of quick questions.....

Have you ever had crimped primer pockets on 40 S&W?

If not, why would primers crush?

Thanks!

40 S&W primer pockets

Could you post a photo? I had a problem last year with Winchester brass that had extra small primer pockets. I separated them out from the other brass, reamed to pocket larger and they primed fine.

Also what equipment are you priming on?

You can crush primers in uncrimped primer pockets if primer pocket ID diameter is too tight for primer cup OD (some non-domestic brand primers have slightly larger diameter primer cups).

If you are using once-fired brass with tighter primer pockets (S&B, RWS, etc.) and larger diameter primers (Fiocchi, Wolf, Tula, PMC, etc.), primer won't often seat fully below flush and remain above the case rim to be crushed.

For tighter primer pockets, I use CCI/Winchester/Magtech primers which I can readily seat .004" below flush. With once-fired S&B/RWS cases, even with CCI/Winchester/Magtech primers, seating to flush is a challenge (I am currently sorting out S&B/RWS cases to have primer pockets swaged with C-H swager).

Larger diameter primers are good for extending the life of brass with loose primer pockets.

To your first question, yes, I have picked up 40 S&W range brass that was crimped. F.C., it was. It was after the Coast Guard had gone through their qualifying. I believe it was FC and 10.

I have about 5,000 of the FC 10 headstamped .40 S&W brass from the Coast Guard and it isn't crimped. I use it for making swaged .44 and .45 bullets, since it's so consistent weight wise.

Hope this helps.

To all,

Thanks! Is seems to be occuring most with WIN brass, though the brass is mixed. I am using Win WSP primers on a Dillon 650. The brass was bought once fired. My inquirey to Winchester indicates they have not crimped any brass other than NATO loads. I am hoping to load a bunch of practice ammo, instead of buying factory. Your help is appreciated.

Thanks!
