.40 vs .45 / Stopping Power

But I'm certainly not getting into the (seemingly endless) debate about 9mm vs .45. I have a 9mm pistol and do not have a .45 ACP pistol, and even if just based on the combat accounts of the .45 ACP in action, I have no problem saying the .45 ACP is likely, on average, more effective. At least until such time as solid evidence to the contrary is shown.

Nor am I. In fact there is a growing body of evidence, gathered by genuine scientists that indicates that there is essentially, little difference in terminal ballistics between any of those three calibers. DocGKR has stated that ME's can't tell the difference in wounds at autopsy!

Ammolab has said that 9mm probablly doesn't need to exceed 900 fps to be just as effective as the same at 1200 fps! The entire field of hangun wounding ballistics has undergone a serious revision over the past decade...

Ah, another ongoing caliber debate! Has anything ever been settled in one of these? I've never had the patience to stick around to find out. I suppose not because they're still going on! :D
I'd first like to know how to quantify or measure "stopping power" before we proceed to answer the question as to which cartridge does better in that department. So far, I don't think anyone has agreed on that one either!

Anyone else notice that this thread started it's life on May 19, 2007?

Amazing how these caliber wars stand the test of time and will never, ever go away.

That being said; I prefer .40.

Just because.

But for me, if it's between .40 S&W or .45 ACP, I'd go .45 ACP. There's nothing wrong with the .40 S&W, but if I'm not going to get the big .45 ACP round, then I'm just going to go for capacity and get the 9mm loaded up with some serious HP ammo. Which is what I have now, H&K USP 9mm.

I agree. I regularly carry a 17 round 9mm but in HD it's usually not about capacity so I'm more comfortable with the .45 in the house. With all the hallways and corners in the home, you usually don't get many chances to put down the BG so make your one (or possibly two) shots count. If you miss then the BG is probably running away with his back to you.

But then again, in the home I'm probably pulling out the 12 gauge anyway. :p

Evan Marshall

DenaliPark, I read quite a few gun blogs, and I noticed on your last posting that you said "Evan Marshall & Ed Sanow lied! They have been totally, completely, discredited, they were caught red handed fabricating & misrepresenting evidence....Just thought you should know, thats why they don't show themselves around the gun forums anymore... ". I wonder if you would be so kind to direct me to some sites which verifies this. I have read their book and have not heard until now that they had lied and fabricated evidence. If you could direct me to some information on this I would be most grateful. Thank you in advance for this. I appreciate it.

They kill about the same with similar ammo. It looks like the .40 FMJ might work a little better than the .45 FMJ.
