Found a great deal on conversation barrels for the 400 Corbon for the 1911, like I needed another chambering to load for. My son and I both got one anyway. As I expected load data is sparse. Any recommendations on specific load data or sources? I’ve got many different powders and about 4 different 10 mm bullets, 165 Berry HBFP, Missouri Bullet 180 hard cast, Lee 175 Tumble lube, and generic 165 gr jacketed FP/TC.

I played with it back in the ‘90s using Win-540 and WSF.

The neck is too short and I could never get adequate neck tension to keep the bullet in place. Lots of instances of bullet push back when chambering the round. This was true with both my reloads and factory Corbon ammo.

Win-540 has been outnof production for years. Looks like I was using 7.8 to 8.0 gr. WSF with a Berry’s 155, or 9.0 with a Sierra 135 JHP. Notes say 9.5 was too hot with this bullet. Probably just setback giving extra-high pressure signs.

Good luck.

5 years ago - Loaded up a few 100 to test in a conversion barrel - sized 45 ACP. Federal brass worked the best for this barrel. No lube and made sure none existed on the bullets or inside of the neck. No problems noticed with bullet set-back. Very light crimp to straighten the flare at the neck - too much and the grip for the bullet is lost.

Conversion barrel is a non-ramped style - used in a Rock Island 45 FS. I did polish the barrel ramp to mirror finish and checked for proper gap and angles on the feed. RN or HP seem to run well in this setup.

Reloaded 1X a hundred of the test loads and ran fine. No failures noted of any kind. Primer pockets stayed tight. Loads were middle load data with Herco. WSF should give similar results. Velocities were ~10% down from hotter 10mm loads with the same weight bullets.

Since have the proper 400 CorBon brass loaded with the same loads/bullets but have not been out to test them.

Here is what I have. Use carefully.

Pivot Dr - Do you have a chronograph? I actually use 10mm data in my 400 Corbon loads (larger case, lower pressure) but for safety reasons - will not share. I used lower range loads for 10mm and worked up only with 180 grain bullets so I didn't have much testing. Once I got to 10% less velocity, using a chrono, than published max 10mm I stopped pushing.

My brass was ejecting about 6 feet away (not too bad on recoil) and the slide was cycling fine. I forgot to log which recoil spring I installed. For powder, I had on hand Herco. I like Herco and WSF for 180 grain bullets, LSWC and Hornady 180XTP.

Heres some stuff for 165gr from the Sierra app. Red stars are max loads for the powder. It is published data from a reputable company and is pretty recent, however I cannot attest to this particular info. Use caution and work up.

I'd contemplated buying a barrel to make a conversion. A buddy offered me 100 or so rounds he said were factory if I wanted them. Just don't see the round being special enough to bother.

Thanks for the information, it’s very helpful. No sense reinventing the wheel here.

Again, Thanks!
