Texas Ranger carrying a 1911 in condition one

Bystander: "Mister, do you know your gun is cocked?"
Texas Ranger: "Yes."
Bystander: "But mister - ain't that DANGEROUS??"
Texas Ranger: "You damn betcha.":D

Moral of the story - if a gun ain't dangerous, it ain't no good!:D :D

If the .40 S&W was unsafe there wouldn't be anywhere near the widespread police usage we see. It probably owns 75% of the market in the Cop world.

If it was unsafe I can guarantee their legal departments would be very busy with lawsuits against the makers. Instead they are buying more .40s. Experience with this caliber has made it better, just as with many other calibers/weapons.

I have ranted on SEVERAL other boards on this topic, as such this will be short and simple...
ANY GUN using a MODIFIED BROWNING ACTION(glock, springfield, beretta, taurus, etc) has an "UNSUPPORTED" case head. The question is how unsupported is unsupported?? The warning comes mostly for those who find a reloading book, start at max and want to see how much fire comes from the end. This concern is low with say the 45ACP who's working pressure is something on the order of a stiff fart, compared to the 10mm.

I have a Taurus 24/7 in .40S&W. I reload for MY gun, meaning I pay attention. All previous pistols I have owned showed pressure signs before max, in my fav book. This one is the exception. I have never bulged a case, I pay attention to pressure signs before that comes about.

As far as stock ammo, shoot anything that floats your boat.

Darkker, I am right with you but nobody wants to listen. I hope you have better luck than I do educating the masses cause sometimes, I think they would rather keep giggling and gossiping like school girls than ever pay attention to common sense and simple fact.

I used to shoot a Glock 23 in .40 cal for years...

With Winchester Silvertip mostly. I don't remember any problems. I think the only things I ever shot were Winchester Silvertips and Federal Hydrashock. I never had a problem.

I remember I tried 180 gr bullets, but didn't like them due to recoil. I preferred the 150 gr or 155 gr bullets and had great luck with them.

I can't comment on other ammo brands since I never used anything else. This was years ago.

I do know the .40 is very dangerous to anyone on the receiving end of it. ;)

I'm not sure if anyone was questioning its stopping power or not. I think it's more than adequate there, but then I've become comfortable with 9x18 and marginally comfortable with .380 in recent times.

P.S. - I was reading one shot stop statisitics based on actual police records. They showed the .40 to be much better with 155 gr bullets than with 180 gr bullets. They showed the 135 gr (one thirty somethings) to be best of all. So why even shoot 180 gr bullets if they're less safe and have less stopping power? I'd prefer a 150 gr or 155 gr, if I still used a .40.
