41 mag loads

I am looking for some data for a hard cast 215grn SWC and Unique. I have Speer #14 and Alliant's web site for data but neither of those lists any data for this combo. Another question - loading for 44 mag and 357 I've noticed that IMR 4227 and H4227 are 52 and 53 on the burn rate chart ( I think ) they're right together anyway, I've also seen some data for each that was the same. Are these the same powder like H110 and W296?

I just got my LoadBook for the .41 mag yesterday...it's about time too because I was tired of hunting around for load data...everyone has two loads and that's about it...this book has compiled a lot of data from different manufacturers in one spot. So...

GSPN - where did you get the LoadBook, sounds like a book I need. I, too, am having a hard time finding loads for the .41mag. I just bought this Blackhawk and really like it. I load for 44 and 357 and have no trouble finding data for those but 41 is hard to come by

As Bush pilot stated go over to the revolver section and read the thread titled .41 mag Association. I got a Ruger BH this year myself and for general purpose ammo I've setteld on 8.5gr of Unique and a 215gr SWC. 1911Tuner turne me on to that load and it is a good one. I haven't chronographed it but according to 1911Tuner it should get close to 1100fps in my 4 5/8" BH. If I need more power than that load will offer then I'll switch to 2400 unless I end up in Alaska that ain't likely Good luck and be advised .41's are very addicting.

Loaded 50 215 Magnus cast over 8.5 grns of Unique to try. Shot 24 of them yesterday.grouped fairly well but lead out the wazoo. Took about 30 minutes to shoot and about 3 hours to clean. 5 cylinder throats measured .410 and 1 measured .411. a random check of 25 bullets averaged .4105. Bullets are supposed to be 14 BHN. Should I raise the pressure or lower the pressure. Jacketed bullets are so much easier,but I really want to shoot lead. Help me with this problem

H-4227 was discontinued some years ago because of that.

IMR-4227 is still available from Hodgdon.

Your throats are undersized if you measured them correctly. They will need to be reamed if they are.

Can you push a lead bullet through them with little or no effort? If you can, you are OK.

Was the lead at the forcing cone and first part of the barrel? If so, I am guessing you need more pressure, and bumping the charge up some may stop the leading, assuming the throats are OK.

I pushed the bullets through with very little effort then measured the bullets. You are correct in that the lead was in the cone and first part of the barrel. Would you bump it up .5 grain, 1 grain? I think max is like 10.4 so 8.5 is pretty mild.

Hard to say, but I would go 1.0 and see how they do. Load 10 to try. If it leads, but leads less, go another .5 and see what happens.

I have a great load with 2400 and it doesn't lead up that bad. It is at 15.6 grs under the MBC trooper boolet. 18 Brinnel. Groups better than I can shoot. It will go 5 for 5 on a 12X12" steel target at 50 yds off hand out of a 6" S+W. Can get a milk jug 3 out of 5 at 100 yds. Pretty fun.

In the .41 Mag, I use 10.0 grains of Unique, usually with a Fed 150, and supposedly get about 1200 fps (haven't clocked this one). Load works great in a Smith 657.

A 9.5 grain load of Unique behind a 215 gr True Cast LSWC from a R-P case lit by a WLP primer gave a chrono'd 1,157 fps average velocity from my 4" 657 Mountain Pistol.

I use 7.0grs of W231 or 7.8gr of Unique for duplication of the Police load. 7.0grs of W231 chrono's at 956 fps, haven't ran the 7.8 grs over the chrono yet but it should be pretty close to the same.

I apply a light coating of Lee's liquid allox to the bullets making them double lubed which in my experience eliminates leading at all velocities. It also seems to help reduce the smoke.

I use 9.0 grains of Rex-3 powder with a Lee 210 grain SWC bullet. That's not a full-power load but it barks pretty loud and is just starting to lead. When I run out of Rex I'll switch to Universal or an equivalent charge (11.0?) of Herco.

Typical of bullets that are too hard, and hard lube only makes it worse. Lead fouling comes from gas cutting past the sides of the bullet. A bullet that is soft enough to obturate and seal the gases off doesn't leave more than a light wash that cleans up easily.
