Hi Folks,

I am looking for ways to maximize the use of my 1972 production Ruger Super Blackhawk.........

.44 Magnum, 7 1/2" barrel length combined with Hard-Cast, large meplat, 240 grain to 300 grain slugs moving at 1,200-1,400 FPS...

Question: Would this combination be much good for close-range defense against large animals in north/northwestern regions?? I know there are many that would say it is NOT optimum. But, what if that is all you have. Would you stay home versus go out into the deep backwoods?

Thanks

I have shot atleast a thousand hardcast 300 grain hand loads out of my super blackhawk that were loaded to the safe only ruger levels and I wouldn't feel at all un protected. Is it a rifle, no but a pistol when you need it is better than a rifle back in camp. The 300 grain loads will penatrate pretty good, I have driven one though the sholder of a big cow elk and broken the off side sholder @ 40 yds. Not big bear but still a larg bone tough animal.
