I am a college student going to a school in the same state that I live in. When I am filling out a 4473 do I give my home address, which is on my DL, or do I give my dorm address and P.O. Box number? Which one is considered my place of residence? I only spend 8 or less months at school, and my parents house is 2 hours away in the same state. I have never been a resident of another state and I am 20. This question pertains to the purchase of a long gun.

Your address has to match your DL or you have to have proof of residence like a bill etc when you are buying a gun.

My buddy was denied buying a 10/22 because he had just moved from Tulsa to Enid and put his new address instead of the one on his DL. Kinda sucked because he had to go wait for a bill with his name and address on it or go update his driver's license for $10 if he wanted to buy the gun.

Students are not considered residents at their college address, as I understand it.

I have posed the same question to dealers in the past, and was told to give my permanent address.

Your address, which cannot be a P.O. number has to have your current address, has to match a valid picture ID such as a Drivers License, Military ID, Alien registration form, Passport or a utility bill or similar document (establishes current place of residence). Student IDs are not accepted.

So even if I have a dorm room on campus, I can give them my home address because that is what my DL has on it? I receive mail addressed to me at both locations. Academic stuff goes to school, personal stuff and financial statements get sent to my parents house in the same state.

your home address would be your residence. think of the dorm as a hotel. your only there temporarily.

Military IDs, alien registration cards, and passports do not contain addresses. Although they may be used to establish identity, some other document must be used to establish address.

We've had five kids go through college.

One thing I've learned is ALWAYS use your real home address on anything that really matters.

It matches your drivers license and your voters registration card, (you do vote don't you?). It will make your life easier by 100%. You can always have your parents forward important mail to you at school.

This is true. Any legal govt picture ID and other document(s) that establish who the person is and where that person resides (in the case of aliens 90 days). So, as a example a passport is a legal govt ID with photo but an additional form of document that establishes current residency is required. A drivers license has both a picture ID and address (if current). A state concealed weapon permit being a govt issued document with photo and current address is also a valid form of identity.
