Hi, I am looking to reload 45/70 and all I can find are 300 gr. either HP or JHP. I found some 305 grain FP but they are lead with a moly coating. Do they make anything else around the 300 grains that are not hollow points?

I have a feeling your quest may be fruitless. The lightest bullet mentioned in Speer#13 is 325 and that was cast. Otherwise 350 is lightest jacket and that was HP.

Thing is, I suspect all bullet profiles will be effectively flat nose, so as to suit tube mags. I guess someone may make a full jacket flat point but yet to see one - and again - 300 seems to make a search even harder.

I am using Lasercast 405's in my loads - some for BFR but also including ''hotties'' with those thru #1 rifle.

Sorry no help.

What exactly are you going to use this for ?? I found some of the 300s a little too fragile for me so I switched to the Winchester Partition load. That was much better ,it smashes through bone and exits without exessive damage. That's the Nosler bullet. The Hornady 350 is heavier construction than their 300.

The gun is a Marilin Guide gun, but it has the tube magazine. I will be usuing the 45/70 for deer in the swamp and thick cover and bear. But for bear, I would like to use the 405 gr. and for deer the 300 gr.

I think the 350 grain Hornady is a good compromise for both. You might take a look at this link if you are interested in handloading for the 45-70.

I also shoot the Guide Gun (ported version), my favorite load is:
Hornady 350 grain RN jacketed bullet
58.0 grains of Hodgdon Varget
CCI 200 primer

Varget is a little hot for 360 grain lead bullets so I use Accurate Arms MR3100 (61.0 grains) same primer.

I make a cast 300 grain gas checked bullet for that.
