I picked up some 45-70 cases and some 45 basic cases that I have never seen before. I took pictures of each. I thought 45-70 cases were straight wall cases but in the picture they don’t look like it. Should I sell the 45 basic cases and get some regular 45-70 brass or trim them? They are list on Midways site for 80 dollars for 20 cases. Any information would be great.

The .45 basic cases that you're looking at on MidwayUSA are 3.25". You'd have to trim off a full inch or more to get them to work in a .45-70, assuming they'll work at all. I would just get Starline .45-70 brass and call it good. $110.00 for 250 cases with free shipping directly from Starline. https://www.starlinebrass.com/brass-cases/45-70-Brass/ Why pay $4 per case and do all that extra trimming when you get get cases for $0.44 each? Just size, prime, charge, seat/crimp.

Sell what you have and buy Starline. Starline is high quality US made brass.

The .45 Basic Brass is what I use for my .45-120 Sharps. It would be a crime to cut them down for .45-70!

Depending on the brand of the brass, the value will vary. Bertram is the least desired, with RCBS, B.E.L.L., Huntington and Norma being more desirable. Jamison International brass was also pretty good.

As near as I can tell from the pictures, your brass is RCBS, so it was made by B.E.L.L. for RCBS when they were in Henderson, NV. The machines for making that brass were sold to PMC in Boulder City, NV, and converted to make 9x19 and .45 acp brass. When PMC in Boulder City went bankrupt and sold the rights to the name to the Korean Company, the machinery was sold to Jamison International, in Sturgis, SD. Jamison ran into some financial problems over a lawsuit, but it's my understanding that there are efforts to open their doors again.

Just buy regular .45-70 brass if that's what you need them for.

Hope this helps.

Fred,

Do you think those 45-70 cases are alright to use? They almost look like a bottleneck case. Thanks.

I just looked at the rest of your pictures and I see that the .45 Basic brass was made by Norma for RCBS. It's still good brass, but for some reason cost less than B.E.L.L. made brass.

Once you process the .45-70 brass; i.e. size, bell and flare, they will work just fine. Just take the decapping pin out of your die to size them. I couldn't tell from the pictures what the headstamp was on the .45-70 case, but if it's from that Winchester box, and is Winchester brass, then it will be fine to use.

I'll look up the price of the Norma .45 Basic brass and get back to you.

Hope this helps.

Fred
