The original factory load will drop a moose or an elk or a black bear with no problems.
That is a 405 round nose flat point soft lead bullet @ 1350 FPS. Slow but very effective. For range shooting, what more do you need?

From the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook:
- #457193 420 grain RNFP, #2 alloy cast, plain base
- 38.5 grains of IMR3031 / 1352 FPS / 16000 CUP
- 28.5 grains of IMR4198 / 1267 FPS / 13900 CUP

You could use any plain base lead 405 RNFP intended for Cowboy Action Shooting available usually in boxes of 500.
You can also get similar 405 grain bullets with a gas check. Usually these are all fairly hard cast, but it won't make much difference.
These are Trapdoor Springfield loads.
At these velocities a gas check isn't needed.
Lead bullet diameter should be .459". (.457" + .002")
You could hunt with these loads out to 100 yards, maybe 125 yards. Zeroed for 100 yards, the rise at 50 yards would be 2".
