I mulling over the idea of purchasing a stainless .45-70 rifle when my tax refund check arrives.

I'd like to know what some of the better low recoil handloads work best in this caliber. Also, is it possible to handload.45 ACP bullets in a .45-70 case? I already handload for my .45 H&K USPc.

.45 acp bullets will not work.EVen though both are '45caliber',the diamaters are several thousandths different.

what powders do you have on hand, btw.? and bullets?

My Lyman's shows some lower powered loads using Unique, and 2400,these coupled wih a lighter weight bullet...say 300 grain cast bullet...would be mild and more affordable than 'hunting' ammo by far.

.452 vs. .458 if I remember correctly. Regardless, different bullet necessary. I've worked up 2400 with a 350g cast for moderate recoil, 1400fps and good accuracy using the Alliant data available online. GMDR.com has some interesting testing and data, make sure you read the article on the front page outlining the data background.

Sounds like it might be time to get into bullet casting.

I've been using Unique on most of my .45 ACP cheapo reloads (from picked up brass), though I have a new bottle of Hodgdon Clays that's is probably less sooty.

Any weight bullet over trailboss powder. I've shot 350 and 405's. The 350's over 16 grains, and the 405's over 13 grains . . lick shooting a bit 22LR .. you pull the trigger and listen to hear the thwack as the bullet hits the berm. Pretty cool!! :)

Just my .02

Regards,
Dave

PS - You can pick up a Lee 405 HB mold for $18.99 . . . .dead simple to create your own boolits.

Here's my favorite: 24 grs. of 2400 (easy to remember) and a 300 gr. lead bullet.

The recoil is mild and accuracy is good. I use a bit of dacron to keep the powder charge in place.
