Dave DeLaurant, also had a #3 Ruger carbine in .45-70. Between the short, falling block action, and the 20" barrel, it was so light and handy.
It also like to kick my brains out; never did find a soft enough load (used kapok and all sorts of stuff to fill up the gigantic case, while keeping the charge down). This was before Trailboss, which is now my go-to for .45 Colt.
It no doubt would have solved the problem with that long departed gun.
Haven't checked the manuals; is Trailboss good in Trapdoors?

Trailboss is not a low pressure powder, merely a low velocity powder. I would not use it in my Springfield Single Shot Rifles.

Black powder will give you much better results, accuracy and velocity, than smokeless powders.

But, it is your rifle. Shoot what you want in it.

Let's be clear; I no longer have a .45-70, but wanted to ask the question for PPs who do.
Love the stuff in .45 Colt. Solved the problem of powder orientation; previous loads varied by over 100'sec, depending if the muzzle was held down, or up, before firing the shot.
Been shooting those Trailboss loads in a Schofield without drama.
