The area where I live is in the center of a large state game land and the Pa. Game Comm. often drops problem bears that it traps within a mile of the house. We had one bear trying to get in only to be stopped by a steel door. I keep a Marlin Guide Gun loaded with stiff hand loads by the door for the family to use. This year because of the heat we are getting a number of rattlers around the house . I was thinking of putting a shot load #1 up in the 45 /70 but I cannot find any load data for CCI shot capsules in 45/70. Can any one help me out?
Thanks!

There are people on both sides of this, but the fact is you can safely shoot .410 shells from a .45-70.

Weather or not you can get them to feed, chamber, or extract is between you and your rifle.

I don't think it would work too good.

The .45 Colt is a straight case & .452" bore.
The 45-70 is a tapered case & .458" bore.

I think the shot cap would fall down the hole while you were trying to crimp it in place.

100+ years ago the government loaded a 45-70 Foraging shotshell. It had a paper tube bullet filled with shot.

Here is an old thread on loading something similar.

If you have a .22 rifle, pick up some CCI .22 shotshells.
They are deadly on snakes at close range.

Another thing you could try with the 45-70 is wax bullets.

Get some paraffin canning wax at the grocery store.
Using a sized and unprimed case, use it as a cookie cutter to punch through a warm block of paraffin wax.
That will leave a wax slug in the case.
Then prime it normally.

It should be fast enough to end a snakes day at close range.

Run the neck about 1/2" into a 45 colt sizing die and then put the capsule in and crimp it. I would try about 8 or s o grains of unique to start and a tuft of kapok or Dacron to hold the powder against the primer. Try the penetration on a few pcs of cardboard or a steel soup can and adjust accordingly. I made shot shells another way, also. Charge if unique, 410 plastic wad, shot, milk carton disc hold in on top with waterglass or duo cement. Works for 444 also. Made everlasting shells for my TC contender from 444, and cutoff 30-40 krags. First shot is dismal but after fire forming they work well. Used the 30-40 cutoffs in a super Blackhawk also. Some have made 410 shells from 303 British but I have not tried that.
