A couple of years ago my wife said " For Christmas why don't you pick out a cheap gun at one of the pawn shops IF you can find one."

Little did she know only 2days before I had spied a 45/70 NAVY ARMS conversion on a #4 SMLE. with a nice montecarlo stock. Not only had I spied it I had put it on layaway for $300.00 along with a model 91 Mauser sporter for a mere $69.00. Suddenly I didn't have to use up all of my rathole money anymore.

After I got the gun home I discovered that it was missing an extractor spring and when I installed one tight enough for it not to fall out it wouldnt feed properly. Without one at all it is more difficult to get it to extract, but it will and it feeds as long as you only put a couple in the magazine.

I bought one of those so called bolt in scope mounts... that I spent hours grinding to get it to fit tight and level and installed a 3x9 scope.

I was surprised when 9 out of 11 shots went into a 6 inch circle at 100 yards while sighting it in. The last of them into a 4 inch target. It's a shooter.

This morning was the 1st chance I've had to deer hunt this year. Last year I only got to go once for a weekend and the year before I only got to go hunt Thanksgiving morning and a couple of weekends. I work to stinking much.

I was thinking about the 10 pointer that was taken out of my stand down at the lease last weekend...when I didn't get to go. Couldn't get down there this weekend either. In fact the week of Thanksgiving I will finally get a Sunday and a Monday down there.

My folks have an 11 acres they live on that was producing some decent deer for me every so often. It is a reasonable drive and I could get up there to get in a hunt. Then the deer vanished from sight. They came for corn at night but simply stopped coming through in the daylight. We may have seen deer 3 or 4 times in the last several years...that is until 3 weeks ago. Doe started moving through and browsing in the daylight. Yesterday my Dad saw a nice eight pointer sniffing out doe trails.

Armed with that information, a Sunday morning off and the 45/70, my best buddy and I headed out last night to squeeze in a quick morning hunt.

Got into my stand just before dawn. My lack of faith resulting from lack of deer in recent years had also resulted in brush blocking my line of sight in several directions. Normally Id have kept it clear, but I'd not expected to hunt there this year. Not to worry Im shooting a 45/70.

I considered the rut activity and sprayed both boot bottoms with doe esterus
before heading to my stand. Just before 7am a fat buck walked out. He was acting spooked and moving away from me while I was trying to get my rifle up, until he crossed the path I'd taken and picked up the scent. He stopped on the spot, faced me in a slight clearing in the brush, I busted him with the 45/70. He fell and barely twitched.

I sat up there for a couple of hours looking at him through my scope, I figured out he wasn't the 8 pointer. I hoped another buck would come through so my buddy could bust him. So I sat and waited. A couple of does ate all of the corn we put out in front of my buddys stand, but he decided not to take one.

When I got down out of the stand I'd never looked at a more wretched looking pair of horns, 5 points, 4 wierd ones on one side and one long one on the other. One aimed forward one going backward. Glad I culled him. Other than that a nice fat deer. Having breakfast sausage made out of him too.

I was using leverevolution ammo, the bullet entered the neck and exited 4 inches behind the rt shoulder. It made jello out of the chest cavity. The exit wound was nominal which indicates to me there was not much expansion.

The 10 pointer at the lease last week was shot at 40 yards with some kind of high dollar ballistic tipped ammo in a silver shell case. A chest shot. They looked for the deer for 2 hours in the dark before they found him. The bullet plowed right through him with little expansion. Makes me like cheap core lokts even more.

A bullet may or may not expand for you, but a 45 bullet is never going to shrink either. I think I am going to have fun with this gun.

Maybe one of you guys can tell me how to keep an ejector spring in it so I can count on it ejecting.
